{"id":2097344,"date":"2025-10-17T10:04:31","date_gmt":"2025-10-17T10:04:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/?p=2097344"},"modified":"2025-10-17T10:04:31","modified_gmt":"2025-10-17T10:04:31","slug":"tame-impalas-new-album-deadbeat-sees-kevin-parker-at-his-most-laissez-faire","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/tame-impalas-new-album-deadbeat-sees-kevin-parker-at-his-most-laissez-faire\/","title":{"rendered":"Tame Impala&#8217;s new album &#8216;Deadbeat&#8217; sees Kevin Parker at his most laissez-faire"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div data-element=\"story-body\" data-subscriber-content=\"\">\n<p>Tame Impala\u2019s work is significant to many.<\/p>\n<p>Whether it be that of the exploratory and ambitious \u201cMind Mischief,\u201d released on \u201cLonerism\u201d in 2012, or the ever-present \u201cThe Less I Know the Better,\u201d off of \u201cCurrents,\u201d leading man Kevin Parker\u2019s sonic presence has set a  tempo for other artists, as well as music as a whole.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, his  brainchild of quasi-psych rock, synth and dream pop, among other genres, could be to blame for \u2014 or celebrate \u2014 a throng of similar artists.<\/p>\n<p>But he doesn\u2019t <i>exactly<\/i> hear it as such.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI accept that I have quite a distinct way of writing vocal melodies and sort of constructing songs,\u201d he says via Zoom. \u201cSometimes \u2026 it sounds like a song is clearly Tame Impala-influenced, but not to the extent that people tell me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo you have any kids?\u201d he asks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople tell me that my daughter looks just like me, but I can\u2019t see it,\u201d he continues. \u201cI\u2019m like, \u2018She just looks like a kid\u2019 \u2026 It\u2019s the same recognizing my music in others\u2019. His last two projects, the aforementioned \u201cCurrents\u201d and \u201cThe Slow Rush,\u201d both cracked the  Top 5 on American charts. The latter album\u2019s lead single, \u201cBorderline,\u201d was certified platinum by RIAA. <\/p>\n<p>Even at last year\u2019s Grammys, he snagged a win in the dance\/electronic recording category for his collaboration with Justice on \u201cNeverender.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With the mounting success, some may find it puzzling that for his latest project, \u201cDeadbeat,\u201d Parker decided to switch things up.<\/p>\n<p>Its leading single, \u201cEnd of Summer,\u201d is classic Tame Impala in terms of its sprawling, seven minute and 12 seconds playtime, but it also sounds more laissez-faire than his previous work. This may come as a shock to fans, but for Parker it was freeing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnytime it\u2019s something I haven\u2019t done before, it\u2019s kind of weird and jarring, but also liberating,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>Another analogy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s like deciding to not do your hair when you leave the house from now on. It\u2019s fun \u2026 but it\u2019s also scary \u2026 therein lies the excitement of doing something new.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s the eternal dilemma between artist and fan \u2014 between an artist giving their fans what they want versus giving themselves what they need.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a tricky one,\u201d he adds. \u201cI think a lot about that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He compares it to his  own experience as a Kings of Leon fan. The Tennessee-born rock quartet had a rather definable turning point in its career upon the release of their third album, \u201cBecause of the Times.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rather than sticking to the rural, Southern indie-rock sound that had occupied their first two projects, they pivoted toward more contemporary influences. I was like, \u2018I can\u2019t believe they\u2019ve done this, they\u2019ve sold out,\u2019\u201d Parker remembers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt took me a long time to realize they were just doing what they wanted to do \u2026 and that was what was calling them. If they had done the same thing as what all their fans wanted them to do, it would have felt wrong for them \u2014 it wouldn\u2019t have been artistically fulfilling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When it came time for Parker to work on \u201cDeadbeat,\u201d he similarly took his approach in a different direction. It felt right to start with this janky phone recording of me playing piano,\u201d he says. \u201cThat was my way of forcing myself to do that [free himself].\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The smaller things, like late nights in the studio, remained more or less the same. Thankfully, he\u2019s got one of his own at his home in Los Feliz, making those a lot easier.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHaving the studio in the house means you can work every night until you fall asleep,\u201d he says. \u201cThe studio is my happy place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This, of course, means he can also get easily sidetracked, but it\u2019s \u201cone of the beauties of making music on your own.\u201d Parker typically tries to hone into his work as much as he can. Even being a dad of two, sometimes the music comes first.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy work process is something that is sacred to me,\u201d he shares. \u201cEven though I have \u2026 children to take care of, I try to never let that affect my work process.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the end of the day, for the music to be as good as I want it to be, it has to take priority sometimes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But he\u2019s no \u201cDeadbeat,\u201d despite what the album title may suggest. He and Sophie Lawrence have a \u201creally good system\u201d when it comes to parenting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce I\u2019m deep into the album process \u2026 it\u2019s \u2018all day, every day,\u2019\u201d Parker says. \u201cThere\u2019s times where I\u2019m an attentive family man, and there\u2019s times when I\u2019m not \u2026 we have help with the kids.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That way, music is \u201cjust as intense,\u201d for him; it\u2019s a way of work that \u201cI like to embrace.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As far as the title goes,  Parker says  \u201cDeadbeat\u201d has a \u201cslightly different meaning\u201d than its use in most instances.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt means the feeling of being disconnected from the world \u2026 feeling like you\u2019re not built to keep up with the world around you,\u201d he explains. \u201cI don\u2019t want to give off the idea that me calling the album \u2018Deadbeat\u2019 is heavily connected to me becoming a parent. Because it\u2019s really not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He also recognizes that, ultimately, people will take it how they want to. It\u2019s an idea he became \u201cat peace\u201d with.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can put words and songs and narratives and names and things out into the world, and you can\u2019t control how everyone\u2019s going to interpret them,\u201d he continues. \u201cSo, if some people interpret the album \u2018Deadbeat\u2019 as like, \u2018deadbeat dad,\u2019 that\u2019s OK.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone\u2019s gonna have their own interpretation.
