Well, not really: When Parker sings about being \u201cback into my old ways again\u201d on the first track of new album <em>Deadbeat<\/em> he\u2019s more talking about getting caught in old behavioral spirals (and perhaps about writing and singing about them)\u00a0than he is about returning to the psychedelic indie rock that first defined the outfit, before a late-2010s pivot to more of a pulsing (though still plenty trippy) blue-eyed soul sound. There\u2019s probably no turning back from the latter at this point \u2014 especially now that Tame\u2019s scored its first Hot 100 hit with the club-ready \u201cDracula\u201d \u2014\u00a0but <em>Deadbeat<\/em> hits hard enough with its relatable ruminations, arresting soundscapes and heavier-than-usual beats that you won\u2019t find much fault with Parker staying exactly where he is.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>Joji, \u201cPixelated Kisses\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\"\/>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tOver earthquaking bass, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/joji\">Joji<\/a> sings plaintively about trying to love from afar: \u201cPixelated kisses got me goin\u2019 insane\/ Replicate this moment from a million miles away.\u201d Fans might be frustrated by the 1:50 runtime and relatively truncated structuring of the alt-R&amp;B star\u2019s first new song in three years, but \u201cPixelated Kisses\u201d also has both the emotional connection and the head-turning sonics to make them remember why Joji was worth missing in the first place, and to get them excited for more to come. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>5 Seconds of Summer, \u201cBoyband\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\"\/>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tShould <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/5-seconds-of-summer\">5 Seconds of Summer<\/a>, the pop-rock group of young Australian heartthrobs, be considered a boy band? The question has surrounded 5SOS for its decade-long career \u2014\u00a0no doubt to its significant irritation \u2014 but now the band is winking at its reputation with new single \u201cBoyband.\u201d \u201cBoy in a boy band\/ Imaginary boyfriend\/ Irritates the metalheads\/ It\u2019s your favorite boy band\u201d goes the tongue-in-cheek chorus, as the group simultaneously leans into the title status and distances itself from it. Does it solve the debate? Not really, but the 5SOS faithful should have a ton of fun singing along to it anyway.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>Charlie Puth, \u201cChanges\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\"\/>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThere\u2019s been some changes in our life\/ I can feel the distance, space and time\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/charlie-puth\">Charlie Puth<\/a> sings on the chorus to the new single \u201cChanges,\u201d whose exuberant melodies stand in stark contrast to the melancholy subject of the relationship-grown-apart lyrics. From the sound of \u201cChanges,\u201d what Puth has really been drifting towards is Steve Winwood\u2019s \u201cHigher Love,\u201d filtered in through the modern-retro production of George Daniel from The 1975. But as always, Puth is well-studied: in a final tribute to the late-\u201980s pop-rock sonics he seems to be playing with, he even offers a pre-bridge piano solo worthy of Bruce Hornsby. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>Teddy Swims, \u201cYou\u2019ve Got Another Thing Coming\u201d <\/strong><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\"\/>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tDid you think it was going to be a Judas Priest cover? (Did you hope it was?) For better or worse, no: soul-pop hitmaker <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/teddy-swims\">Teddy Swims<\/a>\u2018 latest (for the soundtrack to hit Netflix sitcom <em>Nobody Wants This<\/em>) does carry the rueful energy (\u201cIf you think I stayed up late at night\/ Wiping teardrops from my eyes\/ You must be out your godd\u2013n mind\u201d) of the \u201980s metal classic, but not the chugging guitars or the strutting vocals. Still, the kiss-off sounds sweet over lush strings reminiscent of early-\u201970s Isaac Hayes, and Swims has the chops to make the lyrics resound without coming off distastefully bitter. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>Morgan Wallen, \u201cGraveyard Whistling\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube\"\/>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tMorgan Wallen doesn\u2019t often do covers \u2014\u00a0or deluxe editions \u2014 so it\u2019s a little unclear what\u2019s to be made of \u201cGraveyard Whistling,\u201d his new one-off spin on English alt-rock radio regulars Nothing But Thieves\u2019 2014 EP title track. But the anthemic, questioning song does allow Wallen to tap into something different than he really managed across 37 tracks of his <em>I\u2019m the Problem<\/em>, with a near-falsetto chorus and a crescendoing bridge that allows the country superstar to really let it rip.
