{"id":2098502,"date":"2025-10-17T19:57:26","date_gmt":"2025-10-17T19:57:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/?p=2098502"},"modified":"2025-10-17T19:57:26","modified_gmt":"2025-10-17T19:57:26","slug":"we-want-what-were-writing-next-to-be-better","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/we-want-what-were-writing-next-to-be-better\/","title":{"rendered":"\u201cWe want what we\u2019re writing next to be better\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/artists\/english-teacher\">English Teacher<\/a> have told <i>NME<\/i> about the \u201cconcrete validation\u201d they received with their <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/tag\/mercury-prize\">Mercury Prize<\/a> win and have teased their new music will be \u201cbetter\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/english-teacher-win-the-2024-mercury-prize-for-this-could-be-texas-3791098\">The Leeds band won last year\u2019s prize with their debut album \u2018This Could Be Texas\u2019<\/a> and were on hand at this year\u2019s ceremony last night (October 16) at Newcastle\u2019s Utilita Arena, where <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/sam-fender-wins-mercury-prize-2025-for-people-watching-3899105\">Sam Fender<\/a> beat out competition from the likes of <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/artists\/pulp\">Pulp<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/artists\/cmat\">CMAT<\/a>,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/artists\/wolf-alice\">Wolf Alice<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/artists\/fontaines-d-c\">Fontaines D.C.<\/a> and\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/artists\/pa-salieu\">Pa Salieu<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>English Teacher\u2019s victory last year saw them beat albums such as <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/artists\/charli-xcx\">Charli XCX<\/a>\u2019s \u2018<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/reviews\/album\/charli-xcx-brat-review-lyrics-tracklist-3762875\">Brat<\/a>\u2019 and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/artists\/the-last-dinner-party\">The Last Dinner Party<\/a>\u2019s \u2018<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/reviews\/album\/the-last-dinner-party-prelude-to-ecstasy-album-review-radar-3577784\">Prelude To Ecstasy<\/a>\u2019 to take home the prestigious award, and on the red carpet this year, the band brought us up to date on how the win has impacted them in the past 12 months and the current status of their much-anticipated follow-up.<\/p>\n<p>Guitarist Lewis Whiting explained that it was \u201cquite nice knowing there\u2019s no chance we have to go up and say an unprepared speech\u201d this time around.<\/p>\n<p>Reflecting on the win, he said: \u201cI think it restarted the album cycle that we\u2019re on. I felt like we were really busy, but post that, it kind of really continued until about now. Give or take, we\u2019ve been on tour since then, it\u2019s been a mental year. It\u2019s making me reflect a lot on the past 12 months really, it\u2019s been mad.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"BRITs 2025: English Teacher look back at huge milestones and discuss more music on the horizon\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RxgBWGqCZAo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>Drummer Douglas Frost added: \u201cAnd having a concrete validation like that does give you a sense of confidence, which does go a long way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Asked if it all adds more pressure on their second album, frontwoman Lily Fontaine said: \u201cI think that will always be there, regardless. We want what we\u2019re writing to come out next to be better. It\u2019s nice to hear the songs that we wrote as danceable tracks as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s kind of crazy hearing something that you created being put through someone else\u2019s head,\u201d added Whiting. \u201cA lot of them I didn\u2019t expect to sound like that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>English Teacher were the first Mercury winners from outside London since 2014, and this year\u2019s ceremony was the first ever to be held outside the capital, a shift that the band fully support.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve talked about this quite a bit before,\u201d said Fontaine. \u201cObviously, the music industry is important for many different reasons, but the thing is, if you don\u2019t have lots of different kinds of people making art, it\u2019s all going to become monotonous, I think. And then, if it\u2019s monotonous, it\u2019s shit. It\u2019s important that there are so many different perspectives outside of London.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/reviews\/album\/english-teacher-this-could-be-texas-debut-album-review-tracklist-radar-3600231\"><i>NME <\/i>awarded \u2018This Could Be Texas\u2019 the full five stars on its release in 2024<\/a>, noting: \u201cWhat you have in \u2018This Could Be Texas\u2019 is everything you want from a debut; a truly original effort from start to finish, an adventure in sound and words, and a landmark statement. Poised for big things? Who knows if this industry even allows that anymore. Here are a band already dealing in brilliance, though \u2013 who dare to dream and have it pay off. Not everyone gets to go to space, but at least English Teacher make it a damn site more interesting being stuck down here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/fontaines-d-c-on-the-witch-hunt-against-kneecap-and-polices-handling-of-palestine-protests-its-a-really-crazy-thing-that-you-cant-say-3899948\"><i>NME\u00a0<\/i>also spoke to Fontaines D.C. at the ceremony<\/a>\u00a0about the \u201cwitch hunt\u201d against Kneecap and the police\u2019s handling of Palestine protests,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/wolf-alice-first-act-nominated-mercury-prize-four-times-interview-3899985\">as well as Wolf Alice, who were nominated for a record-equalling fourth time<\/a>., and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/pulp-not-itching-to-make-another-new-album-despite-mercury-prize-nomination-for-more-3900007\">Pulp, who revealed they are \u201cnot itching\u201d to make a follow-up to this year\u2019s \u2018More\u2019<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Sam Fender was\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/news\/music\/sam-fender-wins-mercury-prize-2025-for-people-watching-3899105\">crowned the winner of the 2025 Mercury Prize\u00a0<\/a>for his third album,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nme.com\/reviews\/album\/sam-fender-people-watching-review-3840019\">\u2018People Watching\u2019.<\/a>\u00a0He thanked \u201cvery good friends\u201d Fontaines D.C. and CMAT during his acceptance speech, saying that he was in \u201cgreat company\u201d on the shortlist.<\/p>\n<p>In the winner\u2019s room afterwards, Fender added: \u201cWe didn\u2019t think we were going to win anything so I\u2019m still in shock. It\u2019s an absolute honour and it\u2019s amazing it\u2019s happened up here, for the first time outside of London.
