Now, they\u2019re thinking a lot about what it means to be an adult.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cWe started as kids, and now we both have new kids, so that gives us an interesting snapshot on the passing of time. There\u2019s lots to look back on,\u201d says Howie before the intimate Billboard Canada LIVE Q&amp;A and performance at the W Toronto at the end of September. \u201cWe\u2019ve had these highs that we used to dream about, but there\u2019s still this element of feeling the same as we did when we were 16 in our bedrooms first wanting to make music.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe pair\u2019s debut album, 2015\u2019s\u00a0<em><em>Days Gone By<\/em><\/em>\u00a0and 2018 followup\u00a0<em><em>Battle Lines<\/em><\/em>\u00a0were both chart successes on Billboard\u2019s Top Dance\/Electronic Albums chart, while \u201cLove Brand New\u201d spent 12 weeks on Hot Rock &amp; Alternative Songs. They\u2019ve received Grammy and Juno nominations and played dream shows at Red Rocks in Colorado and festivals around the world.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBob Moses\u2019 new album\u00a0<em>Blink\u00a0<\/em>is out Friday (Oct. 17) on AWAL, and singles including \u201cTime of Your Life\u201d are\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ca.billboard.com\/music\/chart-beat\/bob-moses-airplay-chart\"><u>already hits on the Billboard Canada Airplay charts<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBut there\u2019s still something they\u2019re trying to grasp: the elusive nostalgic high you get as a young artist starting out, when the world is still wide open.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThere\u2019s an interesting headspace that comes from the feeling that you have all these highs and lows in life, but you don\u2019t really feel like you can hang on to them in any real way or like they\u2019re necessarily yours. You kind of just blink and they\u2019re gone,\u201d Howie says. \u201cThat\u2019s the idea that we wrestled with a lot on this album, approaching that idea of the ephemeral nature of life. You have to just be present for the journey and maybe that\u2019s the best we can do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tCollaborating is a deliberate act for both of them. They live on opposite sides of the country, Vallance in New York and Howie in Los Angeles. They recorded\u00a0<em>Blink<\/em>\u00a0in Toronto and Vancouver, often writing pieces of music solo and then leaving it for the other to flesh out. But being together in Vancouver helped them remember their early days.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tHowie and Vallance first met as teenagers in art class in the city. They weren\u2019t friends right away \u2014 Howie was a year older, and they had different friend groups. They both started in punk and rock bands, but they had different interests when it came to music.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI had gone singer-songwriter and Jimmy was in full trance mode,\u201d Howie says. \u201cWe were kind of on opposite ends of the energetic spectrum.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBut they recognized something in each other: a desire to take music seriously, not just as a hobby, but as everything.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWhen they met back up years later in New York, that spirit drew them back together to start collaborating. Something clicked in them, and their mix of electronic and rock influences blended into what we now know as Bob Moses\u2019 signature sound.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThough their music is often filed under the electronic\/dance genre, they\u2019ve seen recent success on the Modern Rock Airplay chart. Considering their upbringing, it\u2019s actually a good fit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cWhen we met back up in New York, the common ground we had was actually Canadian alternative rock radio,\u201d says Vallance. \u201cGrowing up in Vancouver listening to 99.3 The Fox, that really impacted us. You\u2019ve got everything from <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/tool\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/tool\/\">Tool<\/a> to <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/nine-inch-nails\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/nine-inch-nails\/\">Nine Inch Nails<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/rage-against-the-machine\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/rage-against-the-machine\/\">Rage Against the Machine<\/a> \u2014 all that stuff that was big in the late \u201890s and early 2000s. Canada embraced British bands like <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/kasabian\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/kasabian\/\">Kasabian<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/oasis\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/oasis\/\">Oasis<\/a>, and produced its own canon of bands from <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/billy-talent\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/billy-talent\/\">Billy Talent<\/a> to <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/the-tragically-hip\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/the-tragically-hip\/\">The Tragically Hip<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/matthew-good\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/matthew-good\/\">Matthew Good Band<\/a>. It all led to a unique musical perspective that is distinctly Canadian.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cWe realize how Canadian we are when we\u2019re outside of Canada,\u201d Vallance jokes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tVallance was raised directly on Canadian music. His mother, Rachel Paiement, was in the popular French-Canadian band Cano and his father, Jim Vallance, is the songwriting partner of Canadian icon <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/bryan-adams\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/bryan-adams\/\">Bryan Adams<\/a> (as well as bands from <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/aerosmith\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/aerosmith\/\">Aerosmith<\/a> to <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/heart\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/heart\/\">Heart<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tLess than a specific sound, Vallance says his upbringing gave him an important perspective that he\u2019s coming to terms with now.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI think a lot of kids that have hockey players as parents, they try to follow that path because they know that the dream is attainable,\u201d he explains. \u201cIt\u2019s the same for me \u2014 knowing that the dream is attainable and that you could have a life where you could raise a family, be cool people\u00a0<em>and<\/em>\u00a0listen to rock music. I just loved it. And I loved it because they loved it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tFor Bob Moses, being a rock star isn\u2019t a wild fantasy \u2014 it\u2019s a realistic goal, and one that can become a long-term sustainable path. But it\u2019s one they\u2019re not taking for granted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cEvery time you do a tour and every time people buy tickets or records get on the radio, none of that is a guarantee,\u201d says Vallance. \u201cSo we\u2019re extremely grateful for all the opportunities that we\u2019ve had and continue to have. We hope we have a long career and we\u2019re just going to keep going for it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI mean, look at<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/iggy-pop\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/artist\/iggy-pop\/\"> Iggy Pop<\/a>,\u201d he continues. \u201cI want to be that dude. He\u2019s been up there doing it for decades. Tom and I have been doing this professionally for 12 or 13 years, and now we want to do it for another 12, 13, 20.
