BROOKLYN, N.Y. (PIX11) \u2014 Music lovers are packing BRIC House in Downtown Brooklyn Friday night as the city\u2019s jazz scene takes center stage for the 11th Annual BRIC JazzFest.<\/p>\n
The two-night festival, running October 17\u201318, transforms the space into a global hub of rhythm, roots, and innovation.<\/p>\n
More Local News <\/a><\/p>\n Headlining night one is Afrofuturist trumpeter and composer Chief Adjuah \u2014 a pioneer of \u201cstretch music,\u201d blending New Orleans\u2019 ancestral sound with modern improvisation. \u201cMan, I\u2019m ready to burn the stage up, man. Let\u2019s get it. I can\u2019t wait \u2014 I\u2019m chomping at the bit,\u201d Adjuah said before taking the stage.<\/p>\n Known for bringing ancestral tradition into contemporary contexts, Adjuah also reinvents the instruments themselves. He calls his handcrafted \u201cBow\u201d a \u201c21st-century corollary to the type of West African double-sided harps.\u201d For him, each note is both homage and innovation. \u201cThis space means so much,\u201d he said. \u201cSo every time we come, we like to bring some new offerings as well, so they\u2019ll be able to hear some stretch music and some things that come from these B-flats.\u201d<\/p>\n Friday\u2019s energy leads directly into Saturday, when GRAMMY-winning jazz legend Dee Dee Bridgewater headlines the same stage.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m happy to be in this BRIC House space for this festival,\u201d she said, reflecting on a career shaped by global experiences and jazz greats like Nina Simone and Nancy Wilson. \u201cMy creative journey has been very much informed by my life experiences,\u201d Bridgewater added. \u201cI am at the moment doing a repertoire of protest songs \u2014 socially conscious songs.\u201d<\/p>\n Deron Johnston, BRIC\u2019s Chief Program Officer, says that spirit defines the festival\u2019s mission. \u201cIt is an example of why BRIC is a cultural lynchpin,\u201d Johnston said. \u201cWe have a global roster of artists celebrating jazz.\u201d<\/p>\n If you missed tonight\u2019s performances, day two of the festival continues Saturday night at BRIC House, located at 647 Fulton Street in Downtown Brooklyn.
