Actor Eric Dane<\/a> has opened up about his battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and is revealing the one symptom \u2014 the very first one \u2014 he experienced, but didn\u2019t think much of at the time it happened.<\/p>\n The former \u201cGrey\u2019s Anatomy\u201d star, 52, revealed this important fact to Diane Sawyer in a new interview<\/a> on \u201cGood Morning America\u201d Monday.<\/p>\n \u201cI started experiencing some weakness in my right hand, and I didn\u2019t really think anything of it at the time,\u201d Dane explained.<\/p>\n \u201cI thought maybe I had been texting too much, or my hand was fatigued,\u201d he added. \u201cBut a few weeks later, I noticed it had gotten a little worse.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cSo I went and saw a hand specialist, who sent me to another hand specialist. I went and saw a neurologist, and the neurologist sent me to another neurologist, who said, \u2018This is way above my pay grade,\u2019\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n It took nine months for Dane to find out what was really going on, but that\u2019s when the \u201cEuphoria\u201d actor was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly referred to as ALS or Lou Gehrig\u2019s disease.<\/p>\n During the interview with Sawyer, Dane revealed his sobering reality \u2014 his right hand has \u201ccompletely stopped working,\u201d which leaves him with \u201cone functioning arm.\u201d He also noted that his left arm is \u201cgoing\u201d and feels like he only has \u201ca few more months\u201d of function in that arm. <\/p>\n And now he\u2019s worried about his legs. <\/p>\n ALS, which is a degenerative neurological disorder, is a condition where symptoms worsen over time, according to the National Institutes of Health<\/a>. <\/p>\n The NIH notes that ALS causes motor neurons, a type of nerve cell in the brain and spinal cord, to deteriorate, causing the muscles to weaken and eventually leads to paralysis.
