\u201cReal Time<\/a>\u201d host Bill Maher<\/a> on Friday cracked several jokes about the nationwide \u201cNo Kings<\/a>\u201d protests planned for Saturday, but he ultimately argued that the demonstrations are valid, as President Donald Trump<\/a> has been acting like \u201can authoritarian Taylor Swift<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The pop star has often used her music to take jabs at people<\/a> she feels have wronged her. Trump appears to have weaponized the Department of Justice<\/a> to do the same, as several lawmakers he considers his political enemies have been criminally indicted in recent weeks.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cThis is all the people who are upset about the obviously anti-democratic things he\u2019s doing here,\u201d said Maher about the protests<\/a>. \u201cThey\u2019re getting out in the streets, they\u2019re saying, \u2018We are not going to take this lying down! Milling around? Yes, we\u2019ll do it milling around.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Millions of Americans are expected to demonstrate Saturday at more than 2,500 protests<\/a> against potential authoritarianism under Trump. And while Maher suggested this won\u2019t accomplish much, he went on to defend the movement against right-wing criticism.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cThe Republicans<\/a> are saying this is not \u2018No Kings Day,\u2019 they said this is \u2018Hate America Day,\u2019\u201d he said Friday. \u201cYeah, liberals hate America? That\u2019s what they think? \u2018Yeah if you won\u2019t stop assembling freely and speaking freely, we\u2019re gonna send our masked, unaccountable secret police to arrest you, as America should be!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Top Republicans have painted the constitutionally protected protests as anti-American<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Rep. Steve Scalise<\/a> (R-La.) said at a press conference last week, \u201cThey\u2019re having this \u2018Hate America\u2019 rally in Washington.\u201d Rep. Tom Emmer<\/a> (R-Minn.) even suggested, with absolutely no evidence, that the \u201cNo Kings\u201d organizers are part of \u201cthe terrorist wing\u201d of the Democratic Party<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cThis \u2018Hate America\u2019 rally that they have coming up for Oct. 18, the antifa crowd and the pro-Hamas crowd and the Marxists, they\u2019re all going to gather on the Mall,\u201d said House Speaker Mike Johnson<\/a> (R-La.).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cHe said, \u2018I am not a king, and the next person who calls me one, they\u2019re going to find their ass in the dungeon, let me tell you!\u2019 He denied it. He said, \u2018I am not a king, I have no intention of becoming a king, but if some country wants to donate a gold crown, I\u2019m not gonna say no.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Maher also seemed troubled by the recent indictments of ex-FBI Director James Comey<\/a>, New York Attorney General Letitia James<\/a> and former national security adviser John Bolton<\/a> \u2014 who became a vocal critic of Trump\u2019s after leaving his first administration.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Bolton was indicted Thursday on charges of violating the Espionage Act<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
