Pop star Sabrina Carpenter hosted \u201cSaturday Night Live\u201d for the first time ever, but it sure didn\u2019t feel like it.<\/p>\n

Carpenter was the musical guest last year when Jake Gyllenhaal hosted<\/u><\/a>, and at the 50th anniversary special<\/u><\/a>, she performed with Paul Simon and appeared in a sketch. Whether it\u2019s because she\u2019s done the show both as a musician and a comedic performer (her song performances are often a mix of both) or not, Carpenter seems perfectly at ease in Studio 8H, like she\u2019s always been there.<\/p>\n

That served her well on an episode that started badly with a retread of a sketch that\u2019s been done a few too many times (keyword: Domingo), and a monologue that, despite Carpenter\u2019s charm, didn\u2019t seem to connect with the audience.<\/p>\n

But after that, Carpenter\u2019s quicksilver timing and ease, plus a diverse set of sketches, put the episode over the top. She sounded just like a 12-year-old boy in a sketch about preteens hosting a podcast called \u201cSnack Homies<\/u><\/a>\u201d with President Trump (James Austin Johnson) as a guest, sold a provocative neck pillow<\/u><\/a> in a funny Shop TV sketch, performed a pretaped \u201cGrind Song<\/u><\/a>\u201d with Bowen Yang, and was thrown out of a window as the host of a girlboss seminar<\/u><\/a>. She scared a coworker<\/u><\/a> (Ashley Padilla, quickly becoming a critical \u201cSNL\u201d utility player) on her birthday and played a singing and dancing washing machine<\/u><\/a> alongside new cast member Veronika Slowikowska.<\/p>\n

It also didn\u2019t hurt that Carpenter\u2019s two playful and well-sung musical performances, for \u201cManchild<\/u><\/a>\u201d and \u201cNobody\u2019s Son<\/u><\/a>,\u201d were showstoppers. Her love of the show was evident: she performed the former wearing a \u201cLive from New York\u201d T-shirt and panties with \u201cIt\u2019s Saturday Night!\u201d written on the back.<\/p>\n

The best argument for inviting Sabrina Carpenter back sometime might be that she held the show together with no outside guests or surprise cameos, which hasn\u2019t happened on \u201cSNL\u201d in a long time. The only exception was a short film from \u201cPlease Don\u2019t Destroy\u201d writer Martin Herlihy at the end of the show that may have been about racism and Frankenstein\u2019s Monsters (yes, plural).<\/p>\n
