Despite being a chart-topping heartthrob in the wildest era of rock \u2018n\u2019 roll excess, singer Richard Marx claims he never gave in to the endless stream of groupies vying for his attention during the height of his fame in the 1980s and \u201990s.<\/p>\n
In an exclusive interview with Page Six,<\/a> the Grammy-winning heartthrob of hits like \u201cRight Here Waiting\u201d admitted he had his share of attention, but added, \u201cOf course I had groupies, but that wasn\u2019t really much of a trapping for me back then.\u201d<\/p>\n According to Marx, he had two reasons for steering clear of obsessed fans and their wild temptations.<\/p>\n \u201cI was already dating the woman who would become my first wife,\u201d he said of his first wife, \u201cDirty Dancing\u201d star, Cynthia Rhodes. \u201cAnd we were together for almost 30 years.\u201d<\/p>\n Marx also said he did not want to be \u201ca douchebag,\u201d and credited his modest high school dating experience for keeping him on the straight and narrow.<\/p>\n \u201cIt was a little easier for me to resist because I had this sense of, I was still the guy in high school who couldn\u2019t get a date,\u201d Marx said. \u201cAnd then all of a sudden, overnight, I have a big video on MTV and now all these girls are throwing themselves at me.\u201d<\/p>\n Instead of being flattered, Marx said he viewed the attention with skepticism.<\/p>\n \u201cThey were the same girls that didn\u2019t look twice at me two weeks ago,\u201d he recalled.<\/p>\n According to Marx, the perspective kept him honest. \u201cI think it helped keep a level head on my shoulder and a pretty good relationship with that whole seduction of thinking that you\u2019re something you\u2019re not.\u201d<\/p>\n Marx and Rhodes, who share three sons, eventually divorced in 2014. He married TV personality and former MTV VJ Daisy Fuentes the following year.<\/p>\n \u201cI still kind of look across the room at her, or look at her in the car next to me, and I kind of can\u2019t believe it,\u201d he said of Fuentes. \u201cI had a crush on her \u2026 You know, every once in a while, I just say to myself, I can\u2019t believe I\u2019m married to Daisy Fuentes. It\u2019s like crazy.\u201d<\/p>\n With a career spanning over four decades, Marx has released 14 No. 1 singles and written for a wide range of artists including \u201c*NSYNC,\u201d Luther Vandross, Kenny Rogers, Barbra Streisand and Ringo Starr.<\/p>\n Marx is set to make his debut at New York\u2019s Caf\u00e9 Carlyle with a run titled \u201cAfter Hours: Confessions at Caf\u00e9 Carlyle,\u201d scheduled from Oct. 21\u201325.
