Bay Area film lovers are in for a treat with this year\u2019s Mill Valley Film Festival<\/a>, one of the most underrated yearly local events. Now in its 48th year, the 11-day festival running Oct. 2-12 brings huge stars into town for early screenings of Hollywood blockbusters, prestigious award bait and international films you likely won\u2019t see anywhere else. It\u2019s arguably the week where you\u2019re most likely to spot an A-list actor in town.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n This year\u2019s slate of \u201cBig Night\u201d<\/a> centerpieces leans heavily on standouts from other festivals like Sundance, Cannes and the Toronto International Film Festival. \u201cHamnet,\u201d the People\u2019s Choice Award winner at TIFF, opens the festival. Other major screenings include Rose Byrne and Conan O\u2019Brien\u2019s gut-wrenching Sundance standout \u201cIf I Had Legs I\u2019d Kick You,\u201d<\/a> Jennifer Lopez\u2019s Oscar play \u201cKiss of the Spider Woman,\u201d<\/a> the Iranian Palme d\u2019Or winner \u201cIt Was Just an Accident,\u201d Brendan Fraser\u2019s emotional Japanese film \u201cRental Family,\u201d<\/a> and a Metallica documentary. Talent from many of these films are expected to be in attendance, and directors Spike Lee and SF-raised Eva Victor<\/a> are scheduled to\u00a0appear for tribute events.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Other award winners include\u00a0\u201cAndre Is an Idiot,\u201d<\/a> a Sundance award-winning documentary about a San Francisco man\u2019s battle against cancer; \u201cNo Other Choice,\u201d Park Chan-wook\u2019s International People\u2019s Choice Award winner at TIFF; Danish Norwegian director Joachim Trier\u2019s Cannes Grand Prix winner \u201cSentimental Value\u201d; bonkers Cannes Jury Prize winner \u201cSirat\u201d; and TIFF People\u2019s Choice Award second runner-up \u201cWake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n On the Hollywood front, there\u2019s the new Springsteen biopic starring Jeremy Allen White; Bradley Cooper and Will Arnett\u2019s comedy-drama \u201cIs This Thing On?\u201d; and a new animated version of \u201cAnimal Farm\u201d that features an array of big names on voice-overs including Seth Rogen, Kieran Culkin\u00a0and Woody Harrelson. That\u2019s not to mention dozens of other films screening months in advance of their theatrical releases, many with stars scheduled to make appearance for Q&As after the films.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Ticket prices vary based on the tier of event (with higher prices for \u201cBig Nights\u201d), but general admission ranges from $16 for California Film Institute members to $20 for the general public.
