Loznitsa, who often makes dramas and documentaries about dark periods of history, returns to the Soviet Union of 1937 to tell the story of a young prosecutor who finds a lost letter from an innocent prisoner that reveals corruption in the secret police.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Five films will have their Israeli premieres at the festival: <em>The Mysterious Gaze of the Flamingo<\/em>, by Diego C\u00e9spedes, winner of the top prize in the &#8220;Un Certain Regard&#8221; section at Cannes; <em>At Work<\/em>, by Val\u00e9rie Donzelli, winner of the Best Screenplay Award at the Venice Film Festival; <em>Made in EU<\/em>, a hard-hitting social drama by Bulgarian director Stephan Komandarev; <em>Summer Beats<\/em>, by Lise Akoka and Romane Gueret, a coming-of-age drama; and <em>Kokuho<\/em>, by Lee Sang-il, Japan\u2019s Oscar submission.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The festival\u2019s classics program, which is always a <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/israel-news\/culture\/the-arava-film-festival-opens-in-israel-683835\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:highlight of this festival;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">highlight of this festival<\/a>, includes<em> The Gold Rush<\/em> (1925), by Charlie Chaplin, a beloved comedy celebrating its 100th anniversary; <em>Contempt<\/em> (1963), by Jean-Luc Godard, about the deterioration of a writer\u2019s marriage while he is on the set of a movie in the south of France, and which is best remembered for Brigitte Bardot\u2019s nude scenes; <em>Blow-Up<\/em> (1966) by Michelangelo Antonioni, an atmospheric mystery considered one of his best films; <em>The Sting<\/em> (1973), by George Roy Hill, a classic heist film starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford; and <em>Chinatown<\/em> (1974), by Roman Polanski, the ultimate neo-noir film set in 1930s Los Angeles, starring Jack Nicholson and Faye Dunaway.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"mb-4 text-lg font-bold\">Funds supporting the festival<\/h3>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Recently, three regional film funds \u2013 the Southern Cinema Fund, the Negev Film Fund, and the Arava Film Fund \u2013 merged into a single body operating under the name United Negev Film Fund.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">To mark this merger, the festival\u2019s opening night will be dedicated to screening short films produced with its support, along with Eyal Halfon\u2019s new film,<em>A Burning Man<\/em>, which recently won Best Israeli Film and Best Actor (for Shai Avivi) at the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/israel-news\/culture\/article-870329\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Haifa International Film Festival;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Haifa International Film Festival<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The Israeli program will also include Eti Tsicko\u2019s <em>Nandauri<\/em>, a drama about an Israeli lawyer returning to her childhood home in rural Georgia, which won several Ophir Awards.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The festival was founded by film producer Eyal Shirai in partnership with the Central Arava Regional Council.
