There are growing calls for parliament to officially strip Prince Andrew of his titles.<\/p>\n

On Friday, Andrew released a statement <\/span><\/a>saying he would stop using “my title and the honours which have been conferred upon me”.<\/p>\n

It came after renewed controversy surrounding his friendship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and fresh scrutiny over his alleged contact with a suspected Chinese spy.<\/p>\n

Accusations that he had sex with Epstein victim Virginia Giuffre were also back in the headlines, ahead of the publication of her posthumous memoir. <\/p>\n

The titles and honours Andrew has relinquished include his wedding day titles: the Duke of York, the Earl of Inverness and Baron Killyleagh; his knighthood as a Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order (GCVO) and his role as a Royal Knight Companion of the Most Noble Order of the Garter.<\/p>\n

However, he remains a prince. <\/p>\n

What can parliament do?<\/strong><\/p>\n

As it stands, despite Prince Andrew’s announcement to give up his titles, he still retains his dukedom.<\/p>\n

That’s because – although he has agreed not to use the title of Duke of York – it can only be officially removed by an Act of Parliament.<\/p>\n

An act is a bill that has been approved by both the House of Commons and the House of Lords and been given Royal Assent by the Monarch.<\/p>\n

Buckingham Palace is understood to be reluctant to use up parliamentary time on the issue, but York Central MP Rachael Maskell is calling for action.<\/p>\n

The MP, who had the Labour whip taken off her for objections to the Government\u2019s welfare reforms, introduced a private members\u2019 bill that would give the monarch powers to remove titles in 2022. She is renewing pressure for this bill to move forward.<\/p>\n\n

There is \u201cno justification\u201d for the UK Government not to bring forward an Act of Parliament to strip Prince Andrew of his titles, the SNP\u2019s leader at Westminster has said. <\/p>\n

Stephen Flynn said he would \u201cnot sit silent\u201d while the family of Virginia Giuffre, and the British public, are \u201cangry and aghast\u201d. <\/p>\n

Mr Flynn said: \u201cThe family of Virginia Giuffre, whose life was destroyed, are angry and aghast. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe public across these isles are angry and aghast, and they both deserve to know that some MPs share their outrage.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo I won\u2019t sit silent. If an Act of Parliament is required to strip the likes of […] Prince Andrew of their titles then there can be no justification from this Labour Government as to why that is not immediately happening.\u201d<\/p>\n
