Paris, a city built on beauty and history, is now gripped by scandal. On Sunday morning, a robbery unfolded inside the Louvre\u2019s legendary Galerie d\u2019Apollon, home to France\u2019s most prized crown jewels.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In just seven minutes, thieves armed with power tools made off with eight pieces of \u201cincalculable\u201d value, leaving behind shattered glass, stunned guards, and a single fallen crown once belonging to Empress Eug\u00e9nie.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cBeyond their market value, these items have inestimable heritage and historical value,\u201d the Louvre said in a statement obtained by People. \u201cThe ministers of culture and the interior are on site with the museum’s management.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to Le Parisien, four individuals were involved, two disguised as museum workers wielding chainsaws and angle grinders, and two others waiting on scooters for a quick escape.\u00a0<\/p>\n

French Interior Minister Laurent Nu\u00f1ez confirmed to France 24 that the robbery lasted only about seven minutes. When guards intervened, the thieves fled, dropping one relic, Empress Eug\u00e9nie\u2019s crown, but taking with them priceless symbols of France\u2019s imperial past.<\/p>\n

Among the treasures stolen was the legendary Tiara of Empress Eug\u00e9nie, commissioned by Napoleon III in 1853 as a wedding gift for his new bride.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The diadem, adorned with 212 pearls and nearly 2,000 diamonds set in silver, represents a lost world of courtly grandeur. Empress Eug\u00e9nie wore it for her 1853 portrait by Franz Xaver Winterhalter and again at Windsor Castle in 1855 during her investiture by Queen Victoria into the Order of the Garter.\u00a0<\/p>\n

After the fall of the Second Empire, the tiara passed through exile, auctions, and aristocratic heirs, including the House of Thurn und Taxis, where it appeared again on the head of the so-called \u201cPunk Princess,\u201d Gloria von Thurn und Taxis, at lavish soir\u00e9es of the 20th century. But now, it has vanished once more.<\/p>\n

Other pieces from Eug\u00e9nie\u2019s personal collection were taken as well, among them, a decorative diamond bow brooch with jeweled tassels comprising 2,438 diamonds and 196 rose-cut diamonds.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Once the centerpiece of a belt, the intricate jewel has long been one of the Louvre\u2019s most admired. Several reliquary brooches were also stolen, tiny masterpieces designed to hold sacred relics that reflected the Empress\u2019s devout Catholic faith.<\/p>\n

The thieves also took a sapphire parure once worn by Queen Hortense and Queen Marie-Am\u00e9lie, a set of luminous blue stones and diamonds that trace France\u2019s royal lineage. The tiara featured 24 Ceylon sapphires mined from what is now Sri Lanka, and a matching necklace and earrings that have adorned generations of queens. Only one sapphire earring from the set reportedly remains.<\/p>\n

Also among the missing is part of the emerald wedding gift Napoleon I commissioned for his second wife, Empress Marie Louise. The set features a necklace with 32 emeralds and 1,138 diamonds and a pair of matching earrings, joined the Louvre\u2019s collection in 2004.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The thieves left behind a single damaged treasure, the Crown of Empress Eug\u00e9nie. The gold diadem, created in 1855 by Lemonnier and adorned with eight imperial eagles, 1,354 diamonds, 1,136 rose-cut diamonds, and 56 emeralds, was found just outside the museum.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Ministry of Culture confirmed that \u201ctwo high-security display cases were targeted, and eight objects of invaluable cultural heritage were stolen.\u201d The investigation, now handled by the Brigade de R\u00e9pression du Banditisme, is being treated as an organized criminal conspiracy.<\/p>\n

This isn\u2019t the first time Europe\u2019s royal gems have disappeared into criminal hands. In 2023, five men were convicted for a $123 million heist at Dresden\u2019s Green Vault, where 21 diamond artifacts were taken, including a sword and hat clasp encrusted with hundreds of stones.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Years before that, four people were arrested in England over the theft of the Portland Tiara, worn at the 1902 coronation of Edward VII. The French Crown Jewels, first assembled in the 16th century under King Fran\u00e7ois I and expanded by Louis XIV, have long been targets for thieves and revolutionaries.<\/p>\n

Much of the collection was dispersed during the Revolution and later sold by the Third Republic in 1887.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
