Last year saw one of the biggest beefs in recent music history as rappers Kendrick Lamar<\/a> and Drake<\/a> went<\/a> against each other in a tirade of videos<\/a>, accusations and attempted lawsuits<\/a>.<\/p>\n But 2025 might have a version of this for a different group of music listeners.\u00a0<\/p>\n In 2024, the music industry saw the rise of British hyperpop artist Charli XCX<\/a> into global stardom with her album \u201cbrat<\/a>.\u201d In the same year, Taylor Swift, the second biggest<\/a> pop star in the world, released her album \u201cThe Tortured Poets Department<\/a>.\u201d This album saw many variations, but the one that raised the most eyebrows was her UK exclusive<\/a> release right around the time when \u201cbrat\u201d was climbing the charts there.\u00a0<\/p>\n Many felt<\/a> this was an intentional move by Swift to prevent Charli XCX\u2019s album from reaching number one.\u00a0<\/p>\n This could have been because Swift felt unfairly attacked by Charli XCX\u2019s song \u201cSympathy is a Knife<\/a>,\u201d\u00a0 where Charli XCX sang lyrics hinting at Swift.<\/p>\n \u201cDon’t wanna see her backstage at my boyfriend’s show,\u201d Charli XCX sang. \u201cFingers crossed behind my back \/ I hope they break up quick.\u201d<\/p>\n People quickly connected that Charli XCX was talking about Swift. In 2023, Swift was allegedly romantically involved with Matty Healy<\/a> of the band The 1975<\/a>. Charli XCX was dating and is now married<\/a> to George Daniel, who is the drummer of The 1975.\u00a0<\/p>\n Although this song is more about Charli XCX feeling she will never be the level of star that Swift is, it seems Swift perceived it as a dig.\u00a0<\/p>\n On her most recent album, \u201cThe Life of a Showgirl<\/a>,\u201d Swift seemed to respond to the comments by Charli XCX.\u00a0<\/p>\n Swift starts her song \u201cActually Romantic<\/a>\u201d with the line \u201cI heard you call me \u2018Boring Barbie\u2019 when the coke’s got you brave \/ High-fived my ex, and then you said you’re glad he ghosted me.\u201d<\/p>\n The song title also appears to be in reference to Charli XCX\u2019s song \u201cEverything is romantic<\/a>.\u201d Swift shared having all the hate she does is \u201cactually pretty romantic if you really think about it.\u201d<\/p>\n Some thought Swift and Charli XCX would reconcile on a remix of \u201cSympathy is a Knife.\u201d This would be similar to what Charli XCX did with Lorde<\/a> on her remix of \u201cGirl, so confusing<\/a>.\u201d However, the reconciliation between the artists did not happen.<\/p>\n Many users online have compared this to last year\u2019s Kendrick and Drake dispute. One user on X<\/a> posted, \u201cTaylor Swift vs Charli XCX is Kendrick vs Drake for white women.\u201d<\/p>\n Although many are saying this in a joking manner, there are some interesting parallels between the two situations, even though they are in two different musical genres.\u00a0<\/p>\n The first thing is the albums Charli XCX and Lamar released before they were launched into the beef. They both were coming down from very emotionally vulnerable albums and shared some of the struggles the artists went through during the time between releases.\u00a0<\/p>\n Both Swift and Drake are some of the biggest artists of the 21st century, occupying<\/a> the top two spots of Billboard\u2019s top 100 artists of the 21st century list.\u00a0<\/p>\n Unfortunately, one of the interesting parallels here is Swift and Drake\u2019s misreading of an important song by their rivals. In Swift\u2019s case, it is \u201cSympathy is a knife,\u201d and in Drake\u2019s it is \u201cMother I Sober<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n Drake\u2019s referred to \u201cMother I Sober\u201d in his song \u201cTHE HEART PART 6<\/a>\u201d where he mocks Lamar\u2019s mention so generational trauma and sexual abuse, \u201cMy mom came over today and I was like, ‘Mother, I\u2014, mother, I\u2014, mother\u2014 Ahh, wait a second, that’s that one record where you say you got molested.\u201d<\/p>\n Athough Charli XCX has not released any sort of response to Swift, this is an interesting part of the 2025 music history. Charli XCX has become a media darling, and Swift has lost some favor<\/a> with the underwhelming nature of her latest album.\u00a0<\/p>\n It is refreshing to see some of the biggest names in music going after each other as listeners. It gives people more music, more storylines and can help listeners understand the artists on a deeper level.<\/p>\n No one can say what is next to come with this current feud between Charli XCX and Swift, but it is sure to be an interesting next few weeks and months for the two.\u00a0<\/p>\n
