ATLANTA\u00a0(WJBF) <\/strong>\u2014 Even as major productions like\u00a0Marvel\u00a0scale back filming in Georgia, state leaders and entertainment advocates say the Peach State\u2019s film industry remains strong, thanks to lucrative tax credits that continue to attract new projects.<\/p>\nUnder the Georgia Entertainment Industry Investment Act, productions can earn up to 30 percent in tax credits\u00a0for shooting in the state. The incentive has made Georgia one of the top filming destinations in the country, and unlike other states, the program is uncapped, meaning there\u2019s no maximum limit on how much credit a production can receive.<\/p>\n
New data shows more than 245 projects were filmed in Georgia last year. Those projects all qualified for the 30 percent tax incentive, which requires productions to spend at least $500,000 in the state.<\/p>\n
According to Georgia Entertainment CEO Randy Davidson, international market conditions have created challenges for U.S. filming locations.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe strong U.S. dollar has made it less expensive to shoot outside of America,\u201d Davidson said. \u201cRight now, the U.K., Australia, and other regions are more attractive for some productions \u2014 that\u2019s one of the challenges we\u2019re battling.\u201d<\/p>\n
Despite that, film and TV productions spent more than $2.5 billion in Georgia this year, underscoring the state\u2019s continued dominance in the entertainment industry.<\/p>\n
Davidson said\u00a0Marvel\u2019s\u00a0decision to move some productions overseas came down to economics, not Georgia\u2019s policies.<\/p>\n
\u201cMarvel\u2019s decision was long-term, based on currency rates, union issues, and costs. It really comes down to the dollar,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n
One of Georgia\u2019s biggest advantages is that its tax credit covers \u201cabove-the-line\u201d costs, including salaries for top-tier actors and directors, a benefit many other states don\u2019t offer.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere have been strikes and threats of strikes, plus currency challenges that make overseas filming more appealing,\u201d Davidson added. \u201cBut that\u2019s something Hollywood has dealt with for decades.\u201d<\/p>\n
Beyond production studios, Georgia\u2019s entertainment ecosystem supports hundreds of local businesses, from catering to set construction, contributing to the state\u2019s broader economy.<\/p>\n
Currently, Beyond the Gates, Will Trent, and Sweet Magnolias are\u00a0filming in Georgia, which are just a few examples of the state\u2019s thriving creative landscape.<\/p>\n
