And the promise of <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nerdist.com\/article\/mark-hamill-only-returned-to-star-wars-because-of-harrison-ford\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:a continuation to the characters;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">a continuation to the characters<\/a> from George Lucas\u2019 beloved original trilogy became a cultural event. It\u2019s also a<em> Star Wars<\/em> tradition that the first movie in each trilogy makes the most money. <em>A New Hope<\/em> was easily the highest earner of George Lucas\u2019 first batch of movies, and <em>The Phantom Menace <\/em>made the most when it came to the prequels.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">So, which <em>Star Wars<\/em> movie made the least profit? <em>The Rise of Skywalker<\/em> had <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nerdist.com\/article\/adam-driver-reveals-original-kylo-ren-redemption-was-not-part-of-original-star-wars-sequel-movie-plan\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:many production problems;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">many production problems<\/a>, making it cost a whopping $490 million. It \u201conly\u201d made a profit of $48 million, despite grossing over a billion globally. The only <em>Star Wars<\/em> movie from the Disney canon that lost money was<em> Solo.<\/em> That one lost $103 million. Of course, Lucasfilm makes far more from <em>Star Wars<\/em> merchandise and licensing than the movies themselves. Ultimately, between toys, clothing, theme parks, and the movies themselves, Disney has made over $12 billion from the brand overall.
