{"id":2105564,"date":"2025-10-21T12:17:05","date_gmt":"2025-10-21T12:17:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/?p=2105564"},"modified":"2025-10-21T12:17:05","modified_gmt":"2025-10-21T12:17:05","slug":"sax-man-deric-dyer-to-launch-new-album-at-party-at-joes-albums","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/sax-man-deric-dyer-to-launch-new-album-at-party-at-joes-albums\/","title":{"rendered":"Sax man Deric Dyer to launch new album at party at Joe&#8217;s Album&#8217;s"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p>From playing with Joe Cocker to playing at <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.joesalbums.com\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.joesalbums.com\/\">Joe&#8217;s Albums<\/a>, saxophonist extraordinaire <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.telegram.com\/story\/entertainment\/music\/2025\/04\/28\/joe-cocker-to-be-inducted-into-rock-and-roll-hall-of-fame\/83329685007\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.telegram.com\/story\/entertainment\/music\/2025\/04\/28\/joe-cocker-to-be-inducted-into-rock-and-roll-hall-of-fame\/83329685007\/\">Deric Dyer<\/a> seems to have the world on the string.\u00a0<\/p>\n<partner-banner util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" class=\"spacer-large\" min-height=\"600\" fluid=\"\" outstream=\"\" momentum=\"\"\/>\n<p>And that&#8217;s not even counting his year-and-a-half long stint touring the world as Tina Turner&#8217;s sax man.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Dyer will have a not-to-be-missed launch party for his new disc,\u00a0\u201cRed String,\u201d\u00a0at 6 p.m. Oct. 24 at Joe\u2019s Albums, 317 Main St., Worcester.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"presto-h2 wp-block-heading\"><strong>&#8216;Timeless classics&#8217;<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;ll be playing songs from the new album, which is filled with timeless classics,\u201d Dyer said. \u201cIt\u2019s a record that has been in the back of my mind for a long time, but I didn\u2019t have the opportunity to bring it to fruition until now.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<partner-banner util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" fluid=\"\" bottom=\"\" lazy=\"\" class=\"spacer-large\" min-height=\"390\" outstream=\"\"\/>\n<p>The event \u2014 which will feature a sax performance by Dyer, as well as a video presentation and stories behind the music \u2014 is free, but Dyer insists that he\u2019s going to give the crowd the \u201c$45 show\u201d at no extra cost.\u00a0<\/p>\n<partner-inline util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" class=\"spacer-large\" placement=\"native-article_link\" sizes=\"[[300, 250], [3, 3]]\" min-height=\"250\" fluid=\"\" outstream=\"\"\/>\n<p>And that&#8217;s not all. Legendary guitarist and fellow Joe Cocker Band member <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.worcestermag.com\/story\/entertainment\/music\/2023\/06\/15\/come-together-cliff-goodwin-and-crew-record-new-album-at-abbey-road\/70297624007\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.worcestermag.com\/story\/entertainment\/music\/2023\/06\/15\/come-together-cliff-goodwin-and-crew-record-new-album-at-abbey-road\/70297624007\/\">Cliff Goodwin<\/a> will join Dyer for a few numbers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><cta-atoms-container-inline util-module-path=\"elements\/cta\" class=\"spacer-large\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;m going to do some stuff from Red String, and then I&#8217;m going to bring Cliff up to fire things up for the last couple of tunes,\u201d\u00a0Dyer said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"presto-h2 wp-block-heading\"><strong>&#8216;Head in the clouds&#8217;<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Dyer is the son of Eric and Betty Dyer, a \u201ctremendous trumpet player\u201d (according to his son)\u00a0who played with Sammy Davis Jr., Shirley Bassey, Engelbert Humperdinck and Bette Midler (when Barry Manilow was her musical director) and a singer on the lines of Peggy Lee, respectively.\u00a0<\/p>\n<partner-banner util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" fluid=\"\" bottom=\"\" lazy=\"\" class=\"spacer-large\" min-height=\"600\" outstream=\"\" momentum=\"\"\/><partner-inline util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" placement=\"native-article_link\" sizes=\"[[300, 250], [3, 3]]\" min-height=\"250\" fluid=\"\" outstream=\"\"\/>\n<p>\u201cI was born in Ireland. Father was a musician, moved to England. The Beatles came along put my father out of business. My father got a gig in Bermuda, moved the whole family to Bermuda when I was 11,\u201d\u00a0Dyer said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>By age 16, Dyer was already an accomplished sax player, playing seven nights a week in night clubs on the island.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn a lot of ways, I was a kid that had his head in the clouds,\u201d\u00a0Dyer\u00a0recalled. \u201cWhen I was 13, the school I was going to didn&#8217;t have a music department, but we had 10 clarinets, and they were asking the kids, does anyone want to play them. And I said, I&#8217;ll give it a go.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Dyer instantly took to music and it turned out he was a natural.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was the first time I had anything that I was really interested in,\u201d\u00a0Dyer continued.\u00a0\u201cMy dad talked to Sister Joseph Anthony at the Catholic school down the street and said, &#8216;My son&#8217;s playing and doing pretty good, but he got nobody to play with. She said, bring him over, even though I didn&#8217;t go to the school.&#8217;\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<partner-banner util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" fluid=\"\" bottom=\"\" lazy=\"\" class=\"spacer-large\" min-height=\"390\" outstream=\"\"\/>\n<p>And at the Catholic school, Sister Joseph Anthony introduced Dyer to the saxophone for the very first time.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"presto-h2 wp-block-heading\"><strong>&#8216;Amazing adventure&#8217;<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In the early \u201870s, the American Standard Band (featuring the aforementioned Cliff Goodwin and singer Kevin Falvey) came to Bermuda to play and asked Dyer to join the band and come back to America. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Dyer, only 19 at the time, left the sandy beaches of sunny Bermuda behind for the dirt-floor basement of Goodwin\u2019s childhood home on 55 Institute Road in Worcester.\u00a0<\/p>\n<partner-inline util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" class=\"spacer-large\" placement=\"native-article_link\" sizes=\"[[300, 250], [3, 3]]\" min-height=\"250\" fluid=\"\" outstream=\"\"\/>\n<p>A few years later, the American Standard Band became Joe Cocker&#8217;s backup band.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI met American Standard from Worcester in Bermuda in the spring of 1975. They asked me to join the band. I moved to Worcester from Bermuda. I lived in the basement of a triple-decker on Institute Road that belonged to Cliff&#8217;s mother,\u201d Dyer said.\u00a0\u201cThen American Standard had this amazing adventure with Joe Cocker. I moved into Boston. I was able to get a gig with Tina Turner and then go back to Joe for another 25 years.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<partner-banner util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" fluid=\"\" bottom=\"\" lazy=\"\" class=\"spacer-large\" min-height=\"390\" outstream=\"\"\/>\n<p>With only 24-hour notice, Dyer was to audition for Tina Turner on Jan. 24, 1987, the day before Super Bowl XXI between the New York Giants and the Denver Broncos.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Dyer passed the audition with flying colors and ended up touring with Tina for the next year and a half on her \u201cBreak Every Rule World Tour,\u201d playing to over five million people and performing 250-plus concerts worldwide.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"presto-h2 wp-block-heading\"><strong>&#8216;The Best&#8217;<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Only July 4, 2023, Dyer was handpicked to perform a hefty sax solo in the performance of \u201cThe Best,\u201d as a tribute to Turner, for a live Fourth of July event in New York City.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Before Turner&#8217;s death, Dyer was invited to be a special guest speaker at the Tina Turner Museum in Brownsville, Tennessee.\u00a0<\/p>\n<partner-banner util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" fluid=\"\" bottom=\"\" lazy=\"\" class=\"spacer-large\" min-height=\"390\" outstream=\"\"\/>\n<p>\u201cI was already contracted to do it, then Tina Turner passed away. So, they decided to do a memorial as well,\u201d\u00a0Dyer said. \u201cThey asked if I would play at the memorial service. Of course, I said, yes. And, I was going to do solo sax.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<partner-inline util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" class=\"spacer-large\" placement=\"native-article_link\" sizes=\"[[300, 250], [3, 3]]\" min-height=\"250\" fluid=\"\" outstream=\"\"\/>\n<p>Dyer did some hunting around for the perfect backing track for \u201cAmazing Grace\u201d and found a version done with Elvis and the London Philharmonic and a gospel choir.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTina is still impacting my life,\u201d\u00a0Dyer said. \u201cI knew that when I was auditioning for Tina, it was a really important turning point in my career but I never thought, at this point in my life, that I would be still reaping the awards.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"presto-h2 wp-block-heading\"><strong>&#8216;Pulling a red string&#8217;<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Dyer was also at the point of wanting to do his next record, and he began looking for songs that he was interested in recording, and to see if they would work for the saxophone.\u00a0<\/p>\n<partner-banner util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" fluid=\"\" bottom=\"\" lazy=\"\" class=\"spacer-large\" min-height=\"390\" outstream=\"\"\/>\n<p>Dyer found a website out of Paris that has tracks that were originally recorded in the studio with real musicians.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe tracks are real. And they sounded so beautiful. I don&#8217;t know the musicians. I don&#8217;t know the arrangers. I just picked what I loved and thought my style of playing would fit,\u201d Dyer said.\u00a0\u201cFrom where I started out, to be able to have this quality at this level, at my home studio, in mind-boggling, absolutely mind-boggling.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Red String features Dyer&#8217;s incendiary sax fleshing out and reinterpreting beloved standards that include Van Morrison\u2019s \u201cHave I Told You Lately,\u201d Etta James\u2019 \u201cAt Last,\u201d Hoagy Carmichael\/Ned Washington\u2019s \u201cThe Nearness of You,\u201d Carmichael\/Stuart Gorell\u2019s \u201cGeorgia On My Mind,\u201d Bob Dylan\u2019s \u201cTo Make You Feel My Love,\u201d Frank Sinatra\u2019s \u201cFly Me To The Moon,\u201d Henry Mancini\/Johnny Mercer\u2019s \u201cMoon River,\u201d the beloved bolero standard &#8220;B\u00e9same Mucho,&#8221;\u00a0 Jimmy Webb\u2019s \u201cWichita Lineman\u201d\u00a0 and John Lennon\u2019s \u201cImagine.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<partner-inline util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" class=\"spacer-large\" placement=\"native-article_link\" sizes=\"[[300, 250], [3, 3]]\" min-height=\"250\" fluid=\"\" outstream=\"\"\/>\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;m a melody guy. I love beautiful melodies, but they have to fit right with the saxophone,\u201d Dyer said. \u201cI tried a couple that didn&#8217;t work. These particular tunes (on the album) sit right in my wheelhouse for the way that I play. And with these beautiful tracks, it&#8217;s an easy collection. It&#8217;s effortless.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<partner-banner util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" fluid=\"\" bottom=\"\" lazy=\"\" class=\"spacer-large\" min-height=\"390\" outstream=\"\"\/>\n<p>For Dyer, the \u201cRed String\u201d symbolizes destiny. He said he couldn&#8217;t plan his musical career any better. And if he could plan it, he wouldn&#8217;t want to have planned it any differently.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted to play music, but did I consciously do it? No. Everybody is pulling a red string and destiny is that red string taking you through these different phrases of your life,\u201d\u00a0Dyer said. \u201cAs for the record, I needed a backing track for the Tina Turner Museum.
