The annual campaign, launched by the magazine in 2006, marked its 20th anniversary this year, and was intended to promote early detection and treatment of <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/breast-cancer\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:breast cancer;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">breast cancer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Born in Edmonds, Washington, Park first rose to fame as the leader of the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/k-pop\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:K-pop;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">K-pop<\/a> boy band 2PM before launching a solo career and founding the record labels AOMG and H1GHR Music in Seoul.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Pictures and videos circulating online showed guests dancing and drinking and Park performing his 2015 hit \u201cMommae\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cI don\u2019t know what our relationship is but I\u2019d like to be introduced to the twins hanging on your chest,\u201d the lyrics of the song go.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The guests included some of South Korea and K-pop\u2019s most recognisable figures such as <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/topic\/bts\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:BTS;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">BTS<\/a> members V and RM, Karina from aespa, and several members of the girl group IVE.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">On social media, fans and breast cancer survivors called out Park for his \u201ctone deaf\u201d performance, saying the song was entirely inappropriate for a campaign intended to honour breast cancer survivors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cWhy in the world would you have Jay Park singing Mommae at an event for breast cancer awareness,\u201d one person <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/clubfaist\/status\/1978779047472542115%20\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:asked;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">asked <\/a>on X.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThe least W Korea could\u2019ve done is brought in speakers or briefly mentioned donating to the cause, or when interviewing idols asked them something about it. \u2018Cause literally they had the whole industry there and it could\u2019ve done so much good. Also having Jay Park there is a choice,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/yoongimygi\/status\/1978821131969740831%20\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:said;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">said <\/a>another.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Another wrote: \u201cI am a breast cancer patient. Did my illness become something for you to party over, drink and laugh about?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Some noted that none of the participants wore pink ribbons, the global symbol of breast cancer awareness and prevention, and that the event\u2019s tone was more of a fashion or entertainment party than a charity fundraiser.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">In a post on Instagram, Park said he apologised \u201cif any cancer patients were offended by my performance\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cTo anyone undergoing cancer treatment who felt uncomfortable or offended by my performance, I sincerely apologize. I wish you good health,\u201d Park said. \u201cThough I was injured, I performed with a good heart, without payment. Please don\u2019t twist that good intention.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Park showed up to the party in crutches and videos showed him holding his crutch while performing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">W Korea deleted the posts on their social media channels shortly after criticism began to come in.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">On 19 October, W Korea apologised for the event, writing in Korean on Instagram: \u201cWe deeply apologise for failing to carefully consider the perspective of breast cancer patients and their families, and for causing discomfort and distress.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">They added that they would \u201cthoroughly review every stage of event planning and execution going forward\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The magazine also faced scrutiny over how much money its campaign had actually raised.
