If you listened to A Day Without Love\u2019s \u201cNo Hater Zone\u201d earlier in the year, you heard some contributions from South Shore songwriter Justin Arena, who brings together a remarkable array of artists from Massachusetts and elsewhere for the full-length \u201cGlory: Fades To Black.\u201d<\/p>\n
Several of the album\u2019s tracks are collaborations with New Bedford singer-songwriter Molly O\u2019Leary, including the opener \u201cSnowflakes,\u201d mental health ode \u201cBrain Vs. Body,\u201d and closer \u201cEldweiss,\u201d and though much of the record is full of soft acoustic sounds, sometimes the dissonance comes through on tracks like the eerie \u201cOur Cage,\u201d which features screaming metal vocals.<\/p>\n
If you were on Vine a decade ago (yes, it really was that long ago), you might recognize Seattle musician Nat Puff from any of a number of skits \u2014 the one where she reacts to an overly contrived \u201crelatable\u201d Facebook meme by deadpanning, \u201cHa ha ha, I do that,\u201d or perhaps the one where she responds to \u201cThere\u2019s only one race, the human race,\u201d by shouting, \u201cWhat about NASCAR?\u201d<\/p>\n\nShe\u2019s on \u201cGlory,\u201d surprisingly enough, making an appearance on \u201cBright Lights\u201d as her solo project Left At London. Puff, who is transgender, joins Arena, who is genderqueer, in addressing the isolating experience of self-discovery, singing together that \u201cthe only way forward is to keep driving away.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIf I didn\u2019t get to choose who I was when I was born\/Then I\u2019m going to choose who I am when I die,\u201d Arena sings, with Puff\u2019s backing vocals echoing behind her. \u201cIf I live every day on a delay\/Then maybe my end will be tailor-made.\u201d<\/p>\n
Arena pulls together O\u2019Leary, A Day Without Love, Myles Bullen and Second Hands for \u201cWear Pink,\u201d an ode to self-acceptance and proud gender nonconformity, and though Arena did not respond to our request for comment on the album, the lyrics tell it all: You\u2019ll feel better when you throw away others\u2019 expectations.<\/p>\n
