Initiation isn\u2019t all that simple, though. In fact, it\u2019s really serendipitous \u2014 and it depends entirely on whether you were meant <\/em>to find the video in the first place.<\/p>\n As TikTok becomes increasingly saturated with Group 7-ers bragging about their newfound status and searching for others like themselves, learning whether or not you\u2019ve landed a coveted spot in the clique is kind of a big deal right now.<\/p>\n So, what exactly is this whole \u201cGroup 7\u201d thing \u2014 and why should you care? Below, we\u2019re breaking down the trend so you can learn about the most elite group of them all.<\/p>\n \u201cGroup 7\u201d is a social experiment conducted by TikTok creator and musician Sophia James. On Oct. 17, James posted a video to the platform, revealing the start of her experiment.<\/p>\n \u201cIt always has been and always will be me versus the algorithm, and today I\u2019ve decided that I am winning,\u201d James said in a video that was captioned \u201cPost number 2<\/a>.\u201d She posted another video, accompanied only by the caption \u201cPost number 3<\/a>,\u201d before formally declaring the intention behind these videos.<\/p>\n \u201cIf you\u2019re seeing this you are in group 4,\u201d read the text on another video<\/a>. \u201cI am posting a bunch of videos and seeing which ones reach the most viewers. This is the fourth post of the batch so you are group 4.\u201d<\/p>\n James posted three more videos, one for each of the remaining groups: Group 5<\/a>, Group 6<\/a> and Group 7<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cIf you\u2019re watching this video, you are in Group 7,\u201d she said in her last group-specific clip. \u201cI have posted seven videos tonight, and this is the seventh one. Just as a little science experiment, to see what video, what kind of video gets the most reach out of the seven. And I don\u2019t know what that says about you, but you\u2019re in Group 7. Welcome.\u201d<\/p>\n Having garnered by far the most likes and views among the videos, \u201cGroup 7\u201d was the clear winner in terms of online engagement. The Group 7-specific clip, as of Tuesday afternoon, had nearly 19 million views, 2.6 million likes and over 119,000 comments.<\/p>\n \u201cThe sense of camaraderie is unmatched,\u201d James captioned a separate video<\/a> posted on Oct. 18, referring to Group 7.<\/p>\n James referred to it as a \u201clittle science experiment,\u201d though it\u2019s fascinating to note that her new single, \u201cSo Unfair,\u201d soundtracked each of these videos. It\u2019s more than an experiment, according to a TikToker named Rebecca Pousma<\/a>. It\u2019s \u201cimmaculate\u201d marketing.<\/p>\n \u201cWhat people haven\u2019t really realized yet is that Sophia James used her own song for this TikTok that\u2019s now going viral, and it\u2019s become an inside joke with the internet,\u201d she explained. \u201cEveryone is using her song, and it is the best marketing technique I have ever seen a musician do.\u201d<\/p>\n Unfortunately, no. It doesn\u2019t work like that. Per the TikTok users who have clung onto James\u2019s TikTok experiment, you\u2019re only a member of Group 7 if you came across that specific video randomly on your \u201cFor You\u201d page. Whichever group\u2019s video you saw first makes you an OG member of that <\/em>group. Typing \u201cGroup 7\u201d into your search bar and then watching the video doesn\u2019t cut it.<\/p>\n True Group 7-ers, however, appear to be thriving on the app. While there\u2019s no clear-cut definition of what it means to be a \u201cGroup 7\u201d member, those who identify as such have defined themselves as being \u201cbaddies\u201d<\/a> and superior to those in other groups. TikTok user Isira Fae, for instance, said that being attractive, darkly humorous, artistic, playful and confident are among the common characteristics of Group 7 members, and thousands seem to agree. Fae\u2019s comment received over 47,000 likes.<\/p>\n Yes! Group 7-ers appear to be in pretty good company.
