In an interview with PEOPLE, Lauren shares how the simple idea changed their mornings<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
Every morning had become a heartbreak. For days, Lauren Baltazar\u2019s daughter would burst into tears before school, clinging to her mom\u2019s leg and begging not to go \u2014 an all-too-familiar scene for parents of young students.<\/p>\n
But one morning, Lauren decided to change the script. In a moment of exhausted inspiration, she told her little girl a little white lie.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen the weekend ended and Monday came, she just started crying every morning,\u201d Lauren tells PEOPLE. \u201cShe didn\u2019t want to go to school. I was doing her hair that morning, and just out of nowhere, it popped into my head \u2014 okay, she cries every day at the gate. So I told her, \u2018Your teacher texted me, and you\u2019re the new gate leader.\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n
Her daughter\u2019s mood flipped almost instantly. The video Lauren captured that day, shared to TikTok with the text overlay \u201cshe\u2019s been crying every morning for school sooo I lied,\u201d shows the little girl proudly waving classmates through the school gate, smiling beside her teacher.<\/p>\n
\u201cSorry not sorry!\u201d Lauren captioned the post, a playful nod to the harmless fib. The video struck a chord online, quickly becoming a viral hit among parents who knew the struggle of morning drop-offs all too well.<\/p>\n
Lauren says the idea came from sheer desperation. \u201cI was stressing out. I have school myself and my older son\u2019s in third grade,\u201d she tells PEOPLE. \u201cI didn\u2019t know what to do, but after I told her about this new role, she just stopped crying. We went to school early, she stood there with her teacher, and they just let her join in. I was laughing because I hadn\u2019t even told her teacher yet.\u201d<\/p>\n
Once the teacher learned about the spontaneous idea, he was fully supportive. \u201cHe was like, oh my God, yes, such a good idea!\u201d Lauren recalls. \u201cHe said, \u2018Whatever helps her come to school.\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n
Since that morning, her daughter hasn\u2019t looked back. She takes her gate duties seriously \u2014 and now she\u2019s the one rushing her mom out the door each day.<\/p>\n\n

\u201cShe actually tells me, \u2018Mommy, I didn\u2019t cry today \u2014 high five!\u2019 \u201d Lauren shares. \u201cShe even helps other kids who cry. She tells them their parents are coming back and that it\u2019s okay.\u201d<\/p>\n
The change didn\u2019t just ease her daughter\u2019s anxiety. It opened up something new inside her. She began to see school not as something to fear, but as a place where she belonged.<\/p>\n
\u201cAt first, she didn\u2019t really have a connection with her teacher,\u201d Lauren says. \u201cBut they clicked. She loves her teacher now \u2014 she even says before bed, \u2018I wish Mr. G could be my teacher forever.\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n
What began as a quick fix to a stressful morning became a lasting source of confidence. \u201cShe\u2019s just happy to go to school,\u201d Lauren says. \u201cIt made a whole 360 difference. She talks to everyone, she sits and has conversations now. She\u2019s so social, and that makes me so happy.\u201d<\/p>\n
Lauren admits she never imagined such a small idea could make such a big difference. \u201cI didn\u2019t think that a little lie like that would change her whole mood about school,\u201d she says. \u201cBut now I\u2019m glad that I did it.\u201d<\/p>\n
For Lauren, the experience revealed something deeper about childhood \u2014 how much belonging truly matters. \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of kids who cry at school, and it\u2019s not because they don\u2019t want to be there,\u201d she reflects. \u201cIt\u2019s because they don\u2019t feel like they have a role. Most of them don\u2019t just want to sit and listen. They think school will be all fun and play, so when it\u2019s not, they feel lost.\u201d<\/p>\n
She adds thoughtfully, \u201cKids just want to feel appreciated. They have their little minds and little hearts \u2014 they\u2019re not touched by anything harsh yet. They just want to see that they can do something, that something positive can happen, even in something they thought was boring.\u201d<\/p>\n
The transformation didn\u2019t just affect her daughter \u2014 it also changed Lauren\u2019s perspective as a parent. \u201cI realized that kids crave that sense of purpose,\u201d she says. \u201cWhen she felt like she was helping others, it just unlocked something in her.\u201d<\/p>\n
And though it all started with a fib, Lauren says it ultimately reinforced empathy and honesty. \u201cI did talk to her about the little lie,\u201d she says. \u201cBut she didn\u2019t seem to mind. I explained that it was so she could see how much she\u2019s capable of, and now she gets that.\u201d<\/p>\n
Looking back, Lauren wouldn\u2019t change a thing. \u201cNo, I think I would have done the same,\u201d she says with a laugh. \u201cIf it wasn\u2019t the gate leader role, it would\u2019ve been something else \u2014 like helping pass out papers or assisting in the library. Just something so she\u2019d feel useful and excited, like, \u2018My teacher needs my help.\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n\n
