Japanese and British singer Rina Sawayama has come constructive criticism after Sabrina Carpenter\u2019s recent \u201cSaturday Night Live\u201d appearance. <\/p>\n

During the Saturday, Oct. 18, episode of \u201cSNL,\u201d Carpenter performed her song \u201cNobody\u2019s Son\u201d against the backdrop of a martial arts studio. She donned a short and sparkly karate uniform as dancers did martial arts-inspired choreography behind her. <\/p>\n

Sawayama took to her Instagram Story on Sunday, Oct. 19, to comment on the performance.<\/p>\n

\u201cBig love to Sabrina, but fellow artists creative teams \u2026 if we are clearly referencing a culture please can you do so with the research, respect and care it deserves,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n

Sayayama specifically took issue with the dancers wearing shoes on the tatami mat.<\/p>\n

\u201cShoes on tatami is jail,\u201d Sawayama quipped.<\/p>\n

Elsewhere in the performance, Carpenter showed off some martial arts moves of her own, breaking blocks of wood and kicking a man in the stomach as she sang the viral bridge of the song.<\/p>\n

Carpenter also performed her hit \u201cManchild\u201d<\/a> during the episode. Dressed in a T-shirt and undies emblazoned with the words \u201cIt\u2019s Saturday Night,\u201d Carpenter pranced around a bedroom set singing into a hairbrush.<\/p>\n

The \u201cEspresso\u201d singer wasn\u2019t just the musical guest. She also made her hosting debut during the episode, taking on characters including a middle school dance attendee<\/a> and a motivational speaker at a \u201cgirlboss\u201d seminar<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cSNL double duty was the least I\u2019ve slept in my life and the best reason to ever not sleep,\u201d Carpenter wrote via Instagram<\/a> on Monday, Oct. 20. \u201cThank you [\u2018SNL\u2019 creator and showrunner] Lorne [Michaels], the amazing cast, crew, and writers for taking me in with open arms.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSNL\u201d is taking the week off, but the sketch comedy show will be back with a new episode on Saturday, Nov. 1. Miles Teller is set to host with musical guest Brandi Carlile. <\/p>\n
