One of Stephen King<\/a>\u2018s perceivedly most \u201cunfilmable\u201d stories has finally gotten the screen treatment. The Long Walk<\/a><\/em>, which the horror maestro first released back in 1979, was adapted for the big screen and is now hitting on-demand streamers after its theatrical run.<\/p>\n The Long Walk<\/em> was one of King\u2019s releases under the pseudonym Richard Bachman and is beloved by millions. It is also a precursor to fellow dystopian survival stories centered on children like Battle\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0The Hunger Games<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>(King himself once even said as much in his Entertainment Weekly<\/a> review of the latter).<\/p>\n So, before the film arrives, what should fans know about\u00a0The Long Walk<\/em> movie? Here\u2019s the rundown.<\/p>\n The film was released in theaters on September 12. It is now available on digital video on-demand services,<\/a> as of October 21.<\/p>\n The story takes place in a dystopian version of America in which the country is ruled by a totalitarian regime that sponsors an annual contest for 100 children to walk until just one remains alive and thus becomes the winner of a cash prize. Those children who cannot maintain the required speed \u2014 a brisk 4 m.p.h. \u2014 are warned a set number of times before being executed by the soldiers accompanying them. There are no breaks for sleep.<\/p>\n Leading the cast of the film adaptation is Cooper Hoffman<\/a> as Raymond Garraty, the central character of the story, who enters the contest and befriends his fellow walkers. David Jonsson<\/a> stars as Peter McVries, Ray\u2019s closest friend among the other kids. Mark Hamill<\/a> also stars as the Major, who oversees the contest and delivers orders of execution. Garrett Wareing<\/a> also stars as Stebbins, son of the Major and fellow contestant who talks in riddles, and Joshua Odjick<\/a> appears as Collie Parker, a tough guy with a penchant for profanity. The first effort to bring the story to screen came in the 1987<\/a> when horror legend George A. Romero<\/a> got the rights to adapt the story (but never did).<\/p>\n Frank Darabont<\/a> (who has so far adapted three King stories with\u00a0The Shawshank Redemption<\/a><\/em>,\u00a0The Green Mile<\/a><\/em>, and\u00a0The Mist<\/em>) also snapped up the rights in 2007<\/a> and predicted the resulting movie would be \u201cmore ragged and loose documentary kind of feel.\u201d<\/p>\n As for the more contemporary effort, the rights were acquired by New Line Cinema in 2018<\/a>, and the studio picked James Vanderbilt to write and direct before switching to Andr\u00e9 \u00d8vredal in 2019<\/a>.
