Netflix is expanding it’s ever-growing portfolio of game-to-screen adaptations by tackling the fictional island of the board game Catan.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, Asmodee \u2014\u00a0the French tabletop gaming publisher that released Catan by Klaus Teuber in 1995 \u2014\u00a0announced that the streamer scored the exclusive global rights<\/a> to the game in a wide-range deal that includes a plan to develop live-action and animation adaptations across film, TV, and unscripted formats.<\/p>\n

Based on the board game originally released as The Settlers of Catan, the upcoming projects will be the first adaptations to bring Catan \u2014 an island where settlers must navigate bountiful and varied landscapes, shifting alliances, and limited resources, while robbers roam the land \u2014 to life.<\/p>\n

All projects under the deal will be produced by Darren Kyman from Asmodee,\u00a0Pete Fenlon from Catan Studio (an Asmodee studio), and Teuber’s sons Guido Teuber and Benjamin Teuber. Roy Lee from Vertigo Entertainment is also attached to produce.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“Millions of people are enjoying Catan since it was created and for many, it remains a gateway to modern board gaming. I am thrilled to see the game expanding to a larger audience who will discover the richness of its universe, I find it exciting for the future of the brand,” Thomas Koegler, CEO of Asmodee, said. “It’s also a testament that board gaming is truly part of pop culture and a popular form of entertainment in everyone’s homes, and I am delighted to continue Asmodee’s relationship with Netflix.”<\/p>\n

Jinny Howe, head of Netflix’s US and Canada scripted series, added, “Anyone who has played Catan knows that the intense strategy at the core of the game has endless opportunities for some serious drama. We’re thrilled to partner across series, features, animation, and games to bring this world to life for hardcore ‘Settlers’ and new fans alike.”<\/p>\n

The deal continues Asmodee’s existing relationship with Netflix, which resulted in the streamer\u2019s 2024 French film\u00a0Family Pack,\u00a0based on Asmodee’s card game\u00a0The Werewolves of Millers Hollow,\u00a0as well as Asmodee creating board games based on popular Netflix shows such as\u00a0Ozark, Squid Game, Stranger Things, and\u00a0Bridgerton.<\/p>\n

Netflix has made a name for itself with its game-to-screen adaptations, which include, Arcane, Castlevania, and Exploding Kittens, as well as the upcoming\u00a0 Assassin\u2019s Creed series, Clue\u00a0and\u00a0Monopoly reality competition series,\u00a0Magic: The Gathering\u00a0animated series, the\u00a0Dungeons and Dragons\u00a0live-action series,\u00a0Forgotten Realms,\u00a0and the Gears of War film.<\/p>\n
