There\u2019s a familiar cowboy aesthetic to the man I\u2019m interviewing today. The square jaw and hairline, the measured speech: Yes, this is a man who indisputably shares DNA with Clint Eastwood.<\/p>\n

\u201cSorry I\u2019m a little late,\u201d Scott Eastwood says as he picks me up in his car. (OK, he picks up my Zoom call in his car.) And away we go. \u201cI\u2019m sweaty,\u201d he adds apologetically \u2014 thankfully less of a problem for a remote passenger. Eastwood\u2019s an active guy, to put it mildly; he surfs in locales around the world, and does a lot of his own stunts on film. For daily workouts, he tells Alexa, he likes to keep himself guessing. \u201cKeep your body confused a little bit, you know?\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s what he\u2019s not into: the typical celeb habit of practicing with a trainer. \u201cI have a lot of buddies who like to work out,\u201d he says. \u201cSo, I\u2019ll just ping them: \u2018Hey, what are we doing today? Lifting, Muay Thai, swimming?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

We\u2019re driving around Austin, Texas, where the 39-year-old Eastwood has been partially based since 2016 (he splits his time between the Lone Star State, California and Mexico). Of course, when you\u2019re a professional actor, work trips to Los Angeles and New York abound; I ask if he ever feels pressure from people in the industry to relocate permanently to Hollywood. \u201cNo,\u201d he says emphatically. \u201cAnd if I did \u2026 I don\u2019t know why I\u2019d be hanging out with those people.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite Eastwood\u2019s reticence to keep a place in LA, it\u2019s definitely got a place for him, work-wise. His latest role is in \u201cRegretting You,\u201d a romantic drama based on a Colleen Hoover novel<\/a>. The insanely popular author\u2019s last book-to-film adaptation was the Blake Lively-Justin Baldoni vehicle \u201cIt Ends With Us,\u201d now mostly known for the legal wrangling between its stars. The new Hoover film boasts a stellar cast and director \u2014 Josh Boone helmed 2014\u2019s \u201cThe Fault in Our Stars\u201d \u2014 and, fingers crossed, less off-screen drama.<\/p>\n

The film revolves around a mother and daughter (Allison Williams and Mckenna Grace, respectively) negotiating their relationship in the wake of a tragic accident. Eastwood plays the pair\u2019s late husband and father, who\u2019s at the center of a spiraling discovery of family secrets, in a cast rounded out by Dave Franco. Per the Hoover formula, you know there will be tears.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor me, it\u2019s about the gray areas in life,\u201d Eastwood says. \u201cEveryone\u2019s got secrets, these things that happen in their lives. So, it\u2019s a foray into that.\u201d<\/p>\n

He wasn\u2019t a Hoover reader beforehand \u2014 \u201cI don\u2019t think I\u2019m the target demo\u201d \u2014 but says he\u2019s definitely aware of the volume of her fandom. \u201cIt kind of reminds me of Nicholas Sparks,\u201d he says, and he should know: Eastwood starred in the 2015 adaptation of Sparks\u2019 novel \u201cThe Longest Ride.\u201d<\/p>\n

But Eastwood is better known for his roles in action movies and thrillers; last month, he starred alongside Robert De Niro and Jamie Foxx in \u201cTin Soldier,\u201d which centered on a cult leader (Foxx) and the feds and a former member (that\u2019d be Eastwood\u2019s character) aligning to take him down.<\/p>\n

Eastwood has also appeared in several movies directed by or starring his dad: His first feature film role was in 2006\u2019s \u201cFlags of Our Fathers,\u201d followed by work in 2008\u2019s \u201cGran Torino,\u201d 2009\u2019s \u201cInvictus\u201d and 2012\u2019s \u201cTrouble With the Curve.\u201d I ask what he\u2019s learned from working with and watching his legendary father \u2014 beloved by actors for his laid-back yet controlled directing style \u2014 on set. \u201cI mean, he\u2019s the best teacher on the planet,\u201d Eastwood says. \u201cNot overthinking it, just getting out there \u2014 that comes with a level of preparedness. If you\u2019re prepped and your team is prepped and you hire solid actors, then you can keep it calm.\u201d At 95, Clint\u2019s still working, having released his latest movie, \u201cJuror #2,\u201d just last year \u2014 quite the role model of industry longevity.<\/p>\n

The younger Eastwood is tight with his seven siblings, despite their sprawling careers and different mothers. (His flight attendant mom, Jacelyn Reeves, reportedly met Clint in his Carmel, Calif., restaurant; the couple had two children during their relationship: Scott and his younger sister Kathryn). \u201cI\u2019m close with most of all my siblings. We have gatherings, we do see each other. Everyone\u2019s busy and doing their own thing. So, we\u2019re all a little spread out. My brother [Kyle] is in Europe a lot because he\u2019s a jazz musician, and my sisters are all doing their own things in different fields. So, yeah, it\u2019s definitely hard to get our schedules to align sometimes!\u201d<\/p>\n

Like the rest of his family, Eastwood is constantly on the move. He\u2019s got two new films in the works after \u201cRegretting You.\u201d First up is \u201cWind River: The Next Chapter,\u201d a sequel to the 2017 Jeremy Renner-Taylor Sheridan drama set on a Native American reservation. And soon he\u2019s headed to Cape Town, South Africa, to shoot \u201cRed Card,\u201d an action thriller based on real events co-starring Djimon Hounsou and Halle Berry.<\/p>\n

When he\u2019s not filming, Eastwood loves to surf; he\u2019s hit the waves in Cape Town, Australia, Indonesia, Mexico and Hawaii (where he spent some of his childhood with his mom, on sprawling ranchland) and California (where he was born and spent the rest, often at his dad\u2019s ranch, riding horses and fishing). Still, the man knows his limits.<\/p>\n

\u201cBeing out in big surf is always scary,\u201d he says. \u201cBut when you see guys surfing Nazar\u00e9 [in Portugal, where a monster break can serve up waves that approach 100 feet] or Jaws [another storied big-wave break, in Maui, Hawaii], that\u2019s a whole other level of scary, and a level of commitment that I\u2019m not really interested in at this point in my life!\u201d<\/p>\n

He is, however, hooked on the adrenaline of doing his own stunts. Alas, there were no arduous physical feats asked of him on \u201cRegretting You,\u201d but he\u2019s had his share of good (read: risky) times on other sets. What\u2019s the one that really stands out? \u201cProbably jumping from a car to a semitruck, going about 40 miles an hour,\u201d he says, referring to the 2017 film \u201cOverdrive.\u201d \u201cThat was pretty dangerous.\u201d<\/p>\n

He\u2019s also willing to jump into a car and be driven to parts unknown in New York City, as he recalls from his shoot with us. \u201cI don\u2019t really know where in Manhattan we were,\u201d he says. \u201cSometimes, I just get in the car and I\u2019m suddenly transported into a different part of the city.\u201d Our cover shoot took place at the Commodore II bar in the East Village, and in line with its retro decor, Eastwood tells us he especially enjoyed the \u201950s-reminiscent looks he sported.<\/p>\n

In real life, he\u2019s a dedicated jeans-and-tees guy who doesn\u2019t spend a lot of time on luxe label loyalty. \u201cIf I was to boil it down to one brand, probably just Levi\u2019s,\u201d he says. As for his T-shirt brand of choice, he demurs: \u201cI probably should have a brand at this point that I like the most, but I usually just wear ones I\u2019ve come across over the years.\u201d Today, for example, he\u2019s wearing a navy-colored Honolulu Fire Department shirt with his gym shorts.<\/p>\n

In contrast to his sartorial brand aversion, though, Eastwood lights up when I ask for restaurant recommendations in the Austin area. \u201cI\u2019ll just give you a couple of the top hits for Mexican,\u201d he says. \u201cIf you\u2019re going for food, I think it\u2019s Polvos. If you\u2019re going for a hang, it\u2019s Matt\u2019s El Rancho. For sushi, it\u2019s Soto. For steak, it\u2019s probably Jeffrey\u2019s or J. Carver\u2019s. And if you\u2019re going for an Asian kind of place, RedFarm is really good.\u201d<\/p>\n

He also recently returned to one of his favorite vacation hangs, Mexico\u2019s San Miguel de Allende. \u201cIt\u2019s about three hours north of Mexico City, old silver mining town. It\u2019s incredible,\u201d he says. \u201cGreat shopping, artisanal vendors that are doing really cool stuff. There\u2019s a lot to see.\u201d<\/p>\n

Just don\u2019t expect to spot Eastwood at South by Southwest, Austin\u2019s big spring film, media and music festival. Like his father, who\u2019s long lived far north of LA in Carmel, he exudes a polite disdain for the more performative trappings of the industry.<\/p>\n

\u201cI usually leave town\u201d during SXSW, he says with a laugh. \u201cIt\u2019s a little corporate, in my opinion. Which is cool, you\u2019ve got to do that stuff. But it\u2019s the local stuff in Austin that is, in my opinion, really fun.\u201d Like his dad, Eastwood\u2019s clearly carving his own original path to stardom.<\/p>\n
