(AXIOS) &#8211; Charlotte\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/local\/charlotte\/music\" rel=\"\">music<\/a> workers are being asked for their perspectives in the city\u2019s \u201cmost extensive survey ever\u201d about the realities of the local scene. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | text-start article-text\">It <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/charlottemusiccensus.org\/\" rel=\"\">went live<\/a> on Wednesday, Oct. 22.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | text-start article-text\"><b>Why it matters: <\/b>The 2025 Charlotte Music Census aims to help stakeholders measure the health of the entertainment ecosystem, which could help Charlotte get closer to its goal of becoming <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/local\/charlotte\/2023\/10\/16\/charlotte-music-city-341369\" rel=\"\">a true music city.<\/a><\/p>\n<ul class=\"list | article-list\">\n<li><span>The results will be presented to decision-makers like local government officials to inform public policy that will help musicians, venue owners, promoters and others in the industry thrive.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>\u201cIf there\u2019s going to be public policy to support music, we need data to inform that public policy,\u201d says Rick Thurmond of Music Everywhere CLT, which is leading the \u201cmusic census.\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"text | text-start article-text\"><b>The big picture: <\/b>Charlotte\u2019s musicians and industry insiders are pushing to cement the city as a \u201cregional hub for music\u201d \u2014 and we\u2019ve made progress, from hosting a <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/local\/charlotte\/2025\/10\/07\/confluence-music-southeast-carolinas-charlotte\" rel=\"\">three-day music conference<\/a> to <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/local\/charlotte\/2024\/04\/29\/uptown-lovin-life-music-festival\" rel=\"\">landing a major music festival.<\/a><\/p>\n<ul class=\"list | article-list\">\n<li><span>News venues, such as The Amp Ballantyne, have opened, and fans have kept longtime venues alive.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Tepper Sports &amp; Entertainment is\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/local\/charlotte\/2025\/10\/06\/uptown-charlotte-music-venue-bank-of-america-stadium-tepper-sports\" target=\"_self\">planning<\/a>\u00a0for a new, 4,400-seat indoor venue near the Panthers\u2019 stadium, building on its success of booking big-name performers at Bank of America Stadium.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"text | text-start article-text\"><b>How it works: <\/b>The online questionnaire is open through Nov. 12 at <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/charlottemusiccensus.org\/\" rel=\"\">CharlotteMusicCensus.org<\/a>. It takes about 13 minutes to complete.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"list | article-list\">\n<li><span>The \u201cmusic census\u201d will ask respondents questions about themselves as well as their takes on the challenges of working in Charlotte\u2019s music scene.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Participants should be 18 or older and live and\/or work in Mecklenburg County.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"text | text-start article-text\"><b>Between the lines: <\/b>Music Everywhere CLT, a nonprofit backed by Charlotte Center City Partners, is teaming up with community groups like Charlotte Is Creative and the Arts &amp; Science Council to put out the census.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"list | article-list\">\n<li><span>\u201cIt really is about the community pulling together to support ourselves moving forward,\u201d Thurmond says.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"text | text-start article-text\"><b>Zoom out: <\/b>The organization Sound Music Cities is conducting the census in about a dozen cities. They\u2019ve found success with similar efforts in <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/local\/nashville\/2024\/01\/22\/music-census-nashville-industry\" rel=\"\">Nashville<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/local\/columbus\/2023\/11\/13\/music-census-columbus-scene\" rel=\"\">Columbus<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/local\/cleveland\/2024\/09\/04\/local-music-scene-census\" rel=\"\">Cleveland<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | text-start article-text\"><b>Case in point:<\/b> Nashville\u2019s survey revealed <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/local\/nashville\/2024\/09\/13\/music-industry-census\" rel=\"\">parking<\/a> was a costly hurdle for musicians to play gigs downtown.
