Without Michael J. Fox<\/strong>\u2019s Marty McFly, the world may never have heard the music made by John Mayer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The Back to the Future<\/em> star, 64, sat down with Stephen Colbert<\/strong> during the Tuesday, October 21, episode of The Late Show<\/em><\/a> where the host asked if it\u2019s true that his iconic character inspired \u201creal-life rockstars\u201d to pick up a guitar.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s what I hear,\u201d Fox said. \u201cJohn Mayer told me [that the character] inspired him to play guitar\u2026 and Chris Martin<\/strong> of Coldplay, a famous Back to the Future<\/em> fan \u2014 I played \u2018Johnny B. [Goode]\u2019 with them at MetLife Stadium and played \u2018Fix You\u2019 with them at Glastonbury in front of 300,000 people.\u201d<\/p>\n

The beloved time travel movie turned 40 earlier this year, which also marks four decades since the Gibson guitar played by Fox\u2019s character in the film was reported missing.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn the decades since the movie\u2019s release, the guitar used in \u2018Johnny B. Goode\u2019 has grown more important for what it isn\u2019t than what it is,\u201d Fox wrote in his newest book, Future Boy<\/em>. \u201cWhat it isn\u2019t is available.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI wish I could claim to possess it,\u201d he continued, \u201cbut I didn\u2019t have the foresight to know how valuable it would become.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSomebody did, though, and whether it\u2019s in their active collection or stashed in their attic or home studio, they\u2019re not speaking up,\u201d he added. \u201cPerhaps they\u2019re waiting for the statute of limitations on vintage guitar theft to expire.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to Fox, the scene in the film in which McFly gets on stage at his parents\u2019 1955 school dance was his \u201cfavorite scene.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt represents dreams coming to fruition; me doing for me what Marty did for himself,\u201d he wrote. \u201cWhat was happening in my life at that moment was no less transformative than what was happening in Marty\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
