\n Where has 2025 gone? One way to mark the dizzying elapsing of time: The Oscar<\/a> race is already coming into focus, now that we\u2019re \u2013 gulp<\/em> \u2013 three months out from nominations.\n <\/p>\n

\n The competition still has much time to take shape, but there are a few frontrunners emerging, starting with Paul Thomas Anderson\u2019s recently released chaotic opus \u201cOne Battle After Another\u201d \u2013 which has enjoyed the best word of mouth this year, notching an impressive critic score of 95 on both Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic. (\u201cOne Battle After Another\u201d is distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, which is owned by celebrity.land\u2019s parent company Warner Bros. Discovery.)\n <\/p>\n

\n But not far behind are several other titles, including many yet to be released, like \u201cSentimental Value,\u201d \u201cMarty Supreme,\u201d \u201cHamnet,\u201d \u201cBugonia\u201d and \u201cWicked: For Good,\u201d to name a few.\n <\/p>\n

\n A preliminary breakdown of top categories follows:\n <\/p>\n

\n <\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/picture>\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\n It\u2019s been 15 years since the Academy opened up this race to more than the previously fixed number of five nominees \u2013 vacillating between eight and ten best picture contenders, and settling consistently on ten<\/a> for the last few years. This year, that leaves the field open to quite a few possibilities. First, there\u2019s \u201cOne Battle After Another,\u201d whose director Anderson has frequently attracted Oscar love over the years and is seemingly a shoe-in for scoring a nomination for the night\u2019s top honor. Ryan Coogler\u2019s period-horror hit \u201cSinners\u201d (also a Warner Bros. Pictures production) is also a solid contender, despite coming out in the summer months, which is a window often overlooked by Academy voters.\n <\/p>\n

\n At this juncture, other buzzy films generating a fair amount of Oscar buzz are the English-, Norwegian- and Swedish-language \u201cSentimental Value\u201d (out on November 7) starring Stellan Skarsg\u00e5rd and Elle Fanning, \u201cHamnet\u201d (out November 27) featuring Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal, and \u201cMarty Supreme\u201d (out on Christmas Day) with Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet and Gwyneth Paltrow. Let us also not overlook the Palme d\u2019Or-winning Iranian film \u201cIt was Just an Accident,\u201d<\/a> out this month.\n <\/p>\n

\n In the \u201cmaybe\u2026could be\u2026you never know!\u201d section, there\u2019s summer actioner \u201cF1,\u201d Netflix\u2019s \u201cJay Kelly\u201d with George Clooney and Guillermo del Toro-directed \u201cFrankenstein.\u201d<\/a> These are probably in the long-shot category, but hey, Hollywood loves a twist.\n <\/p>\n

\n The Academy certainly favors return nominees, but it also can\u2019t resist a new arrival<\/a>. This year, look for newcomer Chase Infiniti \u2013 whose quietly explosive performance is at the center of \u201cOne Battle After Another\u201d \u2013 to be in the conversation. And although not a newbie on the scene, acclaimed Norwegian performer Renate Reinsve could have a place in the race for her work as the resentful daughter of an estranged director in \u201cSentimental Value,\u201d which would mark her first Oscar nod.\n <\/p>\n

\n As for returning favorites, there\u2019s Buckley, who was nominated for best supporting actress in 2022 for \u201cThe Lost Daughter,\u201d and is all but sure to receive one again this year for her lead role in Chlo\u00e9 Zhao\u2019s \u201cHamnet,\u201d playing a grief-stricken mother and wife to one William Shakespeare (Mescal). It would also be a major upset if Cynthia Erivo isn\u2019t again recognized for her performance as Elphaba in the sequel \u201cWicked: For Good,\u201d even though the film has yet to be screened for most anyone.\n <\/p>\n

\n Other possible contenders who are not new to the Oscar race include Amanda Seyfried in \u201cThe Testament of Ann Lee,\u201d Julia Roberts in \u201cAfter the Hunt,\u201d \u201cBugonia\u2019s\u201d Emma Stone and Jennifer Lawrence for \u201cDie My Love.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Let\u2019s assume we\u2019re reserving one chair for \u201cOne Battle\u2019s\u201d Leonardo DiCaprio \u2013 already an Oscar-winner for 2015\u2019s \u201cThe Revenant.\u201d That leaves us four slots to play with in the best actor race.\n <\/p>\n

\n Actually, make that three, because \u201cNarcos\u201d actor Wagner Moura, who is making waves for his work in the Brazilian film \u201cThe Secret Agent,\u201d already won best actor at Cannes for the espionage thriller. In the film, he plays a technology expert in late-\u201970s Recife who discovers he\u2019s being targeted by some unsavory characters. Notable: Only 16 best actor winners from the ritzy Cannes fest<\/a> have gone on to be nominated for an Academy Award.\n <\/p>\n

\n The three other spots could go several ways. Michael B. Jordan, who plays twins with very different fates in \u201cSinners,\u201d and Chalamet, who would be returning for a second consecutive Oscar nomination (and his third in total), are strong options.\n <\/p>\n

\n On their heels, however, might be \u201cThe Bear\u201d star Jeremy Allen White, whose portrayal of Bruce Springsteen in \u201cDeliver Me from Nowhere\u201d has certainly generated press<\/a> and some voter buzz. Other potential nominees include <\/strong>Dwayne Johnson for \u201cThe Smashing Machine,\u201d Ethan Hawke for \u201cBlue Moon\u201d \u2013 in which he plays Broadway lyricist Lorenz Hart<\/a> \u2013 and Jesse Plemons for his turn as a wild conspiracy theorist in Yorgos Lanthimos\u2019 \u201cBugonia.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n \"Amy<\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/picture>\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\n The best supporting actress race is a tough one to predict, since as usual, there\u2019s just so much to choose from. Amy Madigan, known to most for \u201980s films like \u201cUncle Buck\u201d and \u201cField of Dreams,\u201d turned out a bonkers performance in this summer\u2019s breakout elevated horror hit \u201cWeapons\u201d (also from Warner Bros.) and has appeared on several lists as a favorite to be nominated here. It would mark her second Oscar nomination in this same category in exactly 40 years, after 1985\u2019s \u201cTwice in a Lifetime.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n While horror doesn\u2019t often get recognized by the Academy, the precedent has indeed been set \u2013 Ruth Gordon won Oscar gold in 1969 for playing a somewhat similar character in \u201cRosemary\u2019s Baby,\u201d and landmark genre films like \u201cThe Exorcist\u201d and \u201cAliens\u201d also received Academy recognition for the actresses who starred in those films.\n <\/p>\n

\n Outside of that, keep your eyes on Teyana Taylor and Regina Hall, who each shine in \u201cOne Battle After Another,\u201d and Elle Fanning and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas for their work in \u201cSentimental Value.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n And it\u2019s too early to count out Ariana Grande, who will again portray Glinda in the upcoming \u201cWicked: For Good,\u201d especially if the movie ends up being great.\n <\/p>\n

\n If Sean Penn gets a nomination for his mercenary-like villain Colonel Lockjaw in \u201cOne Battle,\u201d he could very well end up joining an elite group of three-time Oscar winners that includes Meryl Streep, Daniel Day-Lewis, Jack Nicholson and Frances McDormand.\n <\/p>\n

\n But \u201cHamnet\u2019s\u201d <\/strong>Mescal, a returning nominee following 2022\u2019s \u201cAftersun,\u201d also has a strong chance. <\/strong>While several actors have gotten nominated for playing roles in films based on Shakespeare\u2019s works, no one has been nominated for playing the man himself. (Yes, 1998\u2019s \u201cShakespeare in Love\u201d was showered with Academy love, but the Bard-playing actor Joseph Fiennes was not nominated.)\n <\/p>\n

\n Other potential contenders in this category could include Skarsg\u00e5rd for \u201cSentimental Value,\u201d Adam Sandler for Netflix\u2019s \u201cJay Kelly,\u201d and Jeremy Strong \u2013 who was nominated last year for his chilling portrayal of Roy Cohn in \u201cThe Apprentice\u201d \u2013 for \u201cSpringsteen: Deliver Me from Nowhere.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Oscar nominations will be unveiled on the morning of January 22, 2026. The 98th Academy Awards will be held on March 15.\n <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
