Kristen Bell<\/strong>\u2019s Joanne and Adam Brody<\/strong>\u2019s “hot rabbi” Noah are back for a second season of Nobody Wants This<\/em>. While critics remain charmed by the couple\u2019s love story, Season 2 broadens its focus to explore other relationships, among them Noah\u2019s brother, Sasha (Timothy Simons<\/strong>), and Sasha’s wife, Esther (Jackie Tohn<\/strong>), as well as Joanne\u2019s sister, Morgan (Justine Lupe<\/strong>), who dives into a romance with her therapist (Lupe\u2019s Succession<\/em> co-star Arian Moayed<\/strong>). Guest stars, including Seth Rogen<\/strong>, join the cast, and one episode even features Brody\u2019s real-life wife, Leighton Meester<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The Los Angeles\u2013set comedy, about a rabbi who falls for an agnostic podcaster, now has showrunners Jenni Konner<\/strong> and Bruce Eric Kaplan<\/strong> at the helm. Critics largely agree the Netflix series remains a fun, witty watch \u2014 but they\u2019re split on whether it has evolved beyond its charming surface.<\/p>\n

Daniel Fienberg<\/strong> at The Hollywood Reporter<\/a><\/em> writes that the show \u201cdoesn\u2019t fall off a creative cliff\u201d in its sophomore season, \u201cbut a lot of charm is diminished.\u201d He adds: \u201cThe new creative team takes evident pains to adjust some of the character-based problems from the first season, but in the process of expanding the profile for several supporting players, Brody and Bell are left playing often identical beats of uncertainty and insecurity to the ones that worked well in the first season. In the process, the chemistry and overall appeal dwindle dramatically.\u201d<\/p>\n

Variety<\/em>\u2019s Alison Herman<\/strong><\/a> calls the new season \u201ca more refined version of itself.\u201d She notes that it \u201chas more depth than it had in Season 1, but that\u2019s not quite the same as going deep.\u201d Herman writes: \u201cThe same issues that keep Nobody Wants This<\/em> from being a nuanced, meaningful story are also the ones that keep it airy enough to gobble up like popcorn. You\u2019ll never be emotionally overcome enough to need to take a beat between chapters, which keeps the engagement metrics right where Netflix likes them. Bell and Brody are pros who can make cutesy banter in their sleep. … The self in question is just fundamentally slight and not especially ambitious.\u201d<\/p>\n
