A week ago, I had dinner with one of my most cherished friends, cherished because they\u2019re not always forcing me to talk about my feelings and deep stuff. They\u2019re down to talk about more important stuff, like reality TV and celebrity gossip.<\/span><\/p>\n I remember vibrating in my seat and clutching a peppery glass of red as I asked, \u201cSo, what do you think about the trial! Can you believe Johnny Depp <\/span>won?!\u201d<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n My friend responded with, \u201cOh my God! I don\u2019t know what to think! They are both <\/span>terrible!\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n I had a visceral reaction to that, to this implication that both Depp and Amber Heard are equally culpable. I suddenly got all tight inside. A feeling of dread came over me. I worried dinner was gonna get super awkward after I <\/span>threw <\/span><\/i>this friend that I like <\/span>so much <\/span><\/i>into the <\/span>freaking garbage <\/span><\/i>for having such a bullshit hot take<\/span>.<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n I did my best to brace myself. I sounded so calm as I said, \u201cBut he\u2019s way worse than her, right?\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n <\/a><\/p>\n If you\u2019re anything like me, you actually didn\u2019t watch a minute of the Johnny Depp vs. Amber Heard trial, in which the former <\/span>Pirates of the Caribbean <\/span><\/i>star sued his ex-wife for defamation because of <\/span>a 2018 <\/span>The Washington Post<\/span><\/i> op-ed<\/span><\/a> she wrote describing herself as a survivor of domestic violence. (FYI, she didn\u2019t specifically name Depp as her abuser in the piece, but he sure cried a river over it and said his career suffered because of the words she wrote, which <\/span>totally<\/span><\/i> tracks based on what we know about <\/span>Hollywood\u2019s esteemed history of protecting vulnerable people,<\/span><\/a> right?)<\/span><\/p>\n If you\u2019re like me, most of the information you got about this trial was from internet memes and short little clips of Depp from decades ago, when he was at his most physically attractive, with big titles that proclaimed, \u201cJOHNNY DEPP BEING CHARMING!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\nThere\u2019s always someone who is way worse!<\/b><\/h2>\n
