NEW YORK (AP) \u2014 If you wondered why Miguel didn’t release a studio album<\/a> for nearly a decade, his response is simple: life.<\/p>\n

\u201cI needed to do some growing. I had to get my (expletive) together.\u201d<\/p>\n

Since 2017\u2019s \u201cWar & Leisure,\u201d the world has experienced a variety of globally-impactful events: a second Donald Trump presidency<\/a>, a coronavirus pandemic, an American social justice movement, an ongoing three-year war between Russia and Ukraine,<\/a> and a two-year Israel-Hamas war that recently entered a ceasefire.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re just seeing, I think, a big question mark of humanity being asked in real time every day,\u201d Miguel said. \u201cI needed to go away and recalibrate and just get in touch with my anger and figure out how best to move forward with that in a productive way \u2026 I’m really glad that I did because it\u2019s what informed this album.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cCAOS\u201d is a sharp departure from the superstar\u2019s vibey, sensual sound that made him a hit-making staple in R&B. The singer-songwriter\u2019s fifth studio project, morphed from his 2023-scrapped \u201cViscera\u201d LP, dropped Thursday, coinciding with his 40th birthday. He wrote on all 12 tracks and handled the bulk of production with Ray Brady. The lone feature belongs to the legendary George Clinton of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame honorees Parliament-Funkadelic.<\/p>\n

Led by the singles \u201cRIP,\u201d \u201cNew Martyrs (Ride 4 U),\u201d \u201cEl Pleito,\u201d and \u201cAngel\u2019s Song,\u201d the album radiates his trendsetting fusion of alternative rock, R&B and electronic sounds, but in unfamiliar, darker tones. The music evokes feelings of urgency, protest and rebellion.<\/p>\n

\u201c This album is the most angsty, angry album<\/a> I\u2019ve ever made. But I think underlying and underwriting the message and the themes is this core need to express discontentment in a healthy way that creates the feeling and the future that I want.\u201d<\/p>\n

The thief of joy<\/p>\n

Miguel also faced internal plights: divorce, family death and industry disillusionment.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe value of my work became about outside appreciation as opposed to internal gratitude,\u201d said the artist who\u2019s earned four top 20 tracks on the Billboard 100. The admission comes from a Grammy winner who\u2019s created new-day classics such as \u201cAdorn,\u201d and \u201cSure Thing\u201d and fan favorite mood-setters like \u201cAll I Want is You\u201d and \u201cSkywalker.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you see something in culture be really successful \u2026 you can start comparing … and it\u2019s such a slippery slope,\u201d said Miguel, who released bits of music during his hiatus, like the EPs \u201cTe Lo Dije\u201d and \u201cArt Dealer Chic 4,\u201d and songs \u201cDon\u2019t Forget My Love\u201d with Diplo in 2022 and \u201cSweet Dreams\u201d with BTS\u2019s J-Hope earlier this year. \u201cIt\u2019s about connecting more deeply and having a deeper conversation with my audience, as opposed to wanting to make the big song.\u201d<\/p>\n

Not a sure thing<\/p>\n

During his hiatus, Miguel and Nazanin Mandi divorced. The singer began dating Mandi at 19 years old before marrying in 2018. They divorced four years later.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a painful thing to go through\u201d said Miguel, who wrote \u201cAlways Time\u201d to address the breakup. \u201cSome things you do have to let go, if you really, really love it, and I think that was a good indication that I needed to take some time for myself.\u201d<\/p>\n

Last month, in celebration of his son\u2019s first birthday, Miguel publicly revealed he was a first-time father with filmmaker and former Vogue China editor Margaret Zhang. \u201cAngel\u2019s Song\u201d is dedicated to his child.<\/p>\n

Spanish-language songs<\/p>\n

\u201cCAOS,\u201d Spanish for chaos, also features another turn from the genre-bending artist: Spanish-language songs. While 2019\u2019s \u201cTe Lo Dije\u201d featured Spanish recordings of previous songs, this project contains original tracks like \u201cEl Pleito\u201d and \u201cPerderme.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was always floated as \u2018You should lean into Latin as a marketing (tactic).\u2019 \u2026 It just didn\u2019t feel natural,\u201d said Miguel, whose mother is African American and father is Mexican American. \u201cHere I am now, and it\u2019s more about my identity and who I am<\/a> and who am proud to be.\u201d<\/p>\n

Back to the future<\/p>\n

Miguel, serving as this year\u2019s scholar-in-residence at NYU\u2019s Steinhardt School, is also focusing on his S1C venture geared toward providing Black, Mexican and Latino creators with development and financial support. He also appreciates the futuristic-R&B sound that swelled during his absence, which he’s largely credited with helping to introduce.<\/p>\n

\u201cI love that I can hear my influence in some of the music today,\u201d said Miguel, who gained younger fans in 2023 after \u201cSure Thing\u201d went viral on TikTok and Instagram more than a decade after its release. \u201cYou\u2019re like, OK, we were in the right place.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite grappling with staying true to yourself and your music, not being captive to the charts, Miguel feels appreciated by his fans, and centers himself in gratitude.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m so lucky to have found a core audience who really rides with me through all of my evolutions,\u201d he said. \u201cI do think that I\u2019ve been appreciated. And I think that there\u2019s opportunity for it to be more, and more importantly, deeper.\u201d<\/p>\n
