More from Variety<\/strong><\/p>\n \u201cWe didn\u2019t want a nostalgic edition,\u201d says Seminci\u2019s director Jos\u00e9 Luis Cienfuegos. \u201cIt\u2019s a luminous edition, in movement \u2014 a festival of filmmakers and for filmmakers.\u201d<\/p>\n With 225 titles and 137 premieres (including 104 Spanish, 29 world, three European and one international), the 70th Valladolid Festival, best known in Spain as the Seminci, stands as one of Europe\u2019s most robust auteur showcases.<\/p>\n This year\u2019s edition gathers global heavyweights \u2014 Jean-Pierre & Luc Dardenne, Lav D\u00edaz, Kelly Reichardt, Pietro Marcello, Ildik\u00f3 Enyedi, Christian Petzold, L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Nemes and Gianfranco Rosi \u2014 alongside an invigorated generation of Spanish filmmakers.<\/p>\n Auteur-Driven, Provocative Edge<\/strong><\/p>\n \u201cUnder Cienfuegos\u2019 direction, Valladolid has gained a more auteur-driven and provocative edge in its film selection,\u201d notes Antonio Saura, CEO of Madrid-based arthouse-crossover sales outfit Latido Films.<\/p>\n That energy defines the 2025 lineup. The official competition brings 24 titles, among them world premieres from Spain\u2019s Rafael Cobos, the Goya-winning co-writer of Alberto Rodr\u00edguez hits \u201cMarshland\u201d and \u201cThe Plague,\u201d now debuting as a feature director with the thriller \u201cGolpes.\u201d<\/p>\n Also vying for the Golden Spike is Fernando Franco with \u201cSubsuelo,\u201d a psychological drama marking the return of the filmmaker whose debut \u201cThe Wounded\u201d won the Special Jury Prize at San Sebasti\u00e1n.<\/p>\n Carlos Saiz, meanwhile, competes with \u201cLionel,\u201d an emotional road movie about a father\u2013son relationship, produced by Spain\u2019s Ic\u00f3nica Producciones in co-production with France\u2019s Promenades Films.<\/p>\n Other Spanish titles include David Trueba\u2019s \u201cAlways Winter,\u201d this year\u2019s closing film, and Judith Colell\u2019s \u201cFrontera,\u201d a Banijay\u2019s Diagonal TV-produced\u00a0thriller set in Spain\u2019s post Civil War. In total, the festival will host 13 world premieres of Spanish films.<\/p>\n Longtime festival favorite Isabel Coixet opens the edition with \u201cThree Goodbyes\u201d (Italy\u2013Spain), adapted from the late Michela Murgia\u2019s novel \u201cTre Ciotole.\u201d Part mid-life reflection, part meditation on food and memory, the film marks Coixet\u2019s third Seminci opener after \u201cThe Bookshop\u201d (2017) and \u201cIt Snows in Benidorm\u201d (2020).<\/p>\n International heavyweights add further prestige: \u201cSilent Friend\u201d by Enyedi, \u201cThe Chronology of Water\u201d by Kristen Stewart, \u201cGirl\u201d by Shu Qi, \u201cSound of Falling\u201d by Mascha Schilinski, \u201cThe Blue Trail\u201d by Gabriel Mascar\u00f3, and Chlo\u00e9 Zhao\u2019s \u201cHamnet,\u201d screening out of competition as a special event.<\/p>\n For the festival\u2019s director, coherence is key. Radical experiments can coexist with crowd-pleasers \u2014 such as \u201cThe Teacher Who Promised the Sea,\u201d a 2023 festival discovery that became a domestic box-office surprise during his first year at the helm.<\/p>\n Its\u00a0artistic yet pragmatic nature also\u00a0defines Valladolid\u2019s role as\u00a0a place of discovery platform, a\u00a0prestige auteurs\u2019 hub just weeks after San Sebasti\u00e1n\u00a0\u2014 and a bridge for awards-season exposure.<\/p>\n Roots in Humanism<\/strong><\/p>\n Founded in 1956 as a religious film week, Seminci evolved into Spain\u2019s bastion of socially conscious cinema. Its roots in humanism \u2014 from Rossellini to Ken Loach \u2014 endure through contemporary themes of migration, identity, gender and ecology, explored in sections such as Punto de Encuentro\u00a0\u00a0\u2013\u00a0reserved for films with potential for significant commercial success \u2013 and\u00a0Tiempo de Historia, aimed at non-fiction productions.<\/p>\n \u201cSeminci was a gateway for realism and a space for debate even during the dictatorship,\u201d Cienfuegos says. \u201cThat\u2019s part of its DNA.\u201d<\/p>\n That legacy of engagement still defines Valladolid today, keeping Seminci vital as one of Europe\u2019s most socially-aware auteur festivals.<\/p>\n A Festival for the Next Generation<\/strong><\/p>\n Beyond the screen, Seminci continues to invest in education and audience development. Two of Spain\u2019s leading film schools \u2014 Madrid\u2019s ECAM and Catalonia\u2019s ESCAC \u2014 receive Honorary Spikes this year for their role in nurturing new talent. That generational focus extends to the Young4Film network, an European\u00a0initiative dedicated to\u00a0building bridges between creators and audiences.<\/p>\n \u201cYou can\u2019t program Seminci without understanding its history,\u201d he adds. \u201cKnowledge is what allows us to keep moving forward.\u201d<\/p>\n A Late-Season Hub<\/strong><\/p>\n Parallel to its artistic programming, Seminci has expanded its professional dimension with the Merci Independent Film Market, the La Meseta development lab and the Europa Cinemas Audience Lab.
