He didn\u2019t want it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cI\u2019d prefer listening to somebody live out their rock-star dreams,\u201d Paquin says. \u201cThe upper level of my dreams was to play DIY basement shows in college.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">As a student, he studied advertising and played rugby. The future didn\u2019t involve music. So, he kept recording in cars and sharing on social media. That\u2019s where everything changed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">In 2020, Paquin uploaded the song <em>Chandelier<\/em> to TikTok and it went viral. Tutorials, covers and memes from others followed. Now he\u2019s leveling up again with the release of his debut album, <em>Hahaha<\/em>, and its supporting world tour. That\u2019s quite the leap for someone whose only music influencer was his audiophile dad.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cMy dad had a \u201878 <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/features\/best-gibson-les-pauls-for-every-budget\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Gibson Les Paul;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Gibson Les Paul<\/a> Deluxe with mini <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/features\/best-humbucker-pickups\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:humbuckers;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">humbuckers<\/a>,\u201d Paquin says. \u201cI used to pull it out of his closet and play in secret.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Paquin got a <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/features\/best-squier-guitars\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Squier Strat;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Squier Strat<\/a> for his eighth birthday and began writing. Years later, he gifted the guitar to a high school friend who gave it a facelift. Paquin shrugged his shoulders. He\u2019s not sentimental about gear.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cI don\u2019t like sticking with one thing,\u201d he says. \u201cNew guitars excite me, but I only own old guitars. They mostly sound better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Paquin prefers wider-necked guitars for easier fingerpicking. His main axe is a 1983 <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/features\/best-stratocasters-top-fender-stratocasters-for-every-budget\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Fender Strat;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Fender Strat<\/a>, but he sometimes turns to his 1973 Guild S-100 or 1971 Memphis Travis Bean Clone. Over the years, plenty of gear passed through his hands \u2013 and under his feet. He stomps on <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/features\/best-looper-pedals\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Looper;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Looper<\/a>, OCD, and Big Muff boxes, all run through <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/features\/best-fender-amps\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Fender amps;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Fender amps<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The multi-instrumentalist wears his influences on his fingers. Tracks like <em>Roll The Dice<\/em> and <em>Everything<\/em> put his love of Brazilian jazz, samba and bossa nova musicians like Luiz Bonf\u00e1 and Paulinho Nogueira front and center. The warm, melodic guitarwork echoes Paquin\u2019s feelings on music: private, personal, intimate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">He says he\u2019s just getting into some Nineties indie and alt-rock bands, and it\u2019s evident on the album. The title track has a strong Flaming Lips vibe. <em>Orangutan <\/em>and <em>I Need to Know<\/em> meet at the intersections of Fugazi\u2019s fire, Sonic Youth\u2019s structure and Pavement\u2019s placidity. The kid\u2019s got range and good taste.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Paquin\u2019s music is familiar and inviting. <em>Hahaha<\/em> welcomes you in with open arms but asks you to take off your shoes.
