The song is predicated on excess, with its cover depicting a sports car being lifted off of a superyacht and bitesize one-liners destined for TikTok virality \u2013 but all of this couldn\u2019t feel further away from Dave\u2019s conflicted third album, <\/span>The Boy Who Played the Harp<\/span><\/em>, released today.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Instead, the project sees Dave grapple with the weight of his success. Notably lacking the clear hit of previous albums \u2013 such as <\/span>Psychodrama<\/span><\/em>\u2019s \u201cLocation feat. Burna Boy\u201d or <\/span>We Are All Alone in this Together<\/span><\/em>\u2019s \u201cClash feat. Stormzy\u201d \u2013 <\/span>The Boy Who Played the Harp <\/span><\/em>favours stripped-back orchestral production that lets Dave\u2019s extended rap monologues take centre-stage. \u201c<\/span>How am I trying to pray for Congo with these diamonds on my neck?<\/span><\/em>\u201d he asks on \u201c175 Months; \u201c<\/span>I cried about slavery then went to Dubai with my girl<\/span><\/em>\u201d arrives a similar lyric on seven-minute piano-backed soliloquy \u201cMy 27th Birthday\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n

These central tensions are framed by frequent references to the Old Testament Book of Samuel, in which the biblical David \u2013 Dave\u2019s own namesake \u2013 plays a harp in order to soothe the tormented King Saul. Most widely, this religious text is intended to illustrate the corruptive nature of power and virtues of just leadership, emerging as a guiding light to Dave\u2019s own struggle to come to terms with his position at the apex of the UK rap game.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

These parallels resurface in <\/span>The Boy Who Played the Harp<\/span><\/em>\u2019s titular climax, in which Dave describes feeling a \u201ctotal powerlessness\u201d against the numerous injustices in the world, many of which he feels he has contributed to. \u201c<\/span>With the will of David in my heart\/ The story of the boy who played the harp<\/span><\/em>\u201d lands the project\u2019s final line. Much like the Book of Samuel, it seems that Dave settles on music as his weapon against evil.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

With no more than two choruses to share between the project\u2019s ten tracks (delivered by Tems and Jim Legxacy respectively), and minimal production pushed to the back of the mix, <\/span>The Boy Who Played the Harp<\/span><\/em> clearly focuses on dense lyricism above all else. Fortunately, it is some of the most impactful ever heard in UK rap, and more than enough to keep fans fed for another four years (though I think we can all agree to hope for less next time around).
