It\u2019s where all possibilities exist.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><strong>What was your first guitar?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cI found my dad\u2019s American Standard Sunburst <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/features\/best-stratocasters-top-fender-stratocasters-for-every-budget\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Strat;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Strat<\/a> when I was eight, and the first lick he taught me was the intro to Stairway to Heaven. That Christmas I got a black pawn-shop Ibanez that I carried everywhere. It was like another limb!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><strong>What about a guitar you had to part with?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cAn airline destroyed my acoustic Taylor 814CE \u2013 cracked top, ripped binding, wrecked sides. It was repaired but never the same. It was a really sad moment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThen one time I was working with a bunch of kids through Notes for Notes. I had this teal American Standard Strat, and one of the kids fell in love with it. I felt called to donate it. I often think about that guitar \u2013 but I love knowing it made that kid\u2019s day. Maybe even their path!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><strong>You\u2019ve got incredible precision and technique. Who influenced that? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cWhen I was 10 I followed my dad to bluegrass camps and fell in love with flatpicking and fingerstyle. Bluegrass is as clean as it gets; distortion can hide things, but bluegrass won\u2019t. I also learned Tommy Emmanuel songs. I thought it was so cool that you can play <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/features\/best-bass-guitars-for-every-budget\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:bass;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">bass<\/a> and melody at once.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cAt 13 I started working with Randy Bachman. He introduced me to jazz chords and Lenny Breau. From there I went deep into Clapton, Hendrix \u2013 my favorite \u2013 and Stevie Ray Vaughan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cListening to John Mayer blew my mind with the way he fused their styles into contemporary music. And Derek Trucks\u2019 playing sounds like singing. He pulls from Indian scales and microtones, which showed me you don\u2019t have to play by the usual rules to speak directly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><strong>You experienced a watershed moment with Buddy Guy.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThat moment was so special. I was 18 and underage, but he invited me down to his club in Chicago. His band was so good \u2013 they just raised the floor, and I had to elevate to that. I remember hopping up with him, having no idea what I was playing, but I just knew everything would be okay.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cI learned from Buddy that it\u2019s not just about skill. It\u2019s about who you surround yourself with. I try to hire band members who challenge me to be better. If I\u2019m the best person in my band, something\u2019s wrong. I want people who push me; who say, \u2018Come on, give me more!\u2019 If we\u2019re not challenging ourselves, what are we doing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><strong>Have you had any other \u201cpinch-me\u201d moments?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cSomeone once told me I had vibrato like Eric Clapton. I thought, \u2018Well, if you\u2019re gonna give me a compliment, you can definitely say that!\u2019 It made me start paying more attention to what makes my phrasing and solos unique.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThen there was touring with Keith Urban. He taught me that music is really a conversation. We\u2019d have these guitar battles every night \u2013 he\u2019d play a few bars, then I\u2019d respond. It reminded me that <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarworld.com\/features\/the-50-greatest-guitar-solos-of-all-time\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:guitar solos;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">guitar solos<\/a> are like lyrics. He\u2019s one with his instrument. I love how he challenges himself onstage; he\u2019ll change melodies and solos from night to night.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cI\u2019ll also never forget shooting the Silver Sky commercial with John and Ariel Posen. We were talking about playing in sixths and how it ties up my brain and how it\u2019s hard sometimes to keep track.<\/p>\n<div class=\"\">\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">There are stories in my life I\u2019ve never really talked about, but it\u2019s important to claim back your power<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cJohn says, \u2018Yeah, I feel the same way.\u2019 Ariel and I looked at each other like, \u2018No way \u2013 you\u2019re John Mayer! You\u2019re all-knowing!\u2019 It was so cool to realize one of my favorite players on the planet is human too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><strong>What did writing your <\/strong><strong>fence sitter<\/strong><strong> EP do for you?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cI\u2019ve been trying to write as vulnerably as I ever have. Songwriting is therapy; I probably save a lot of money from my real therapist because I write songs! In my 20s the question got louder; still didn\u2019t know. Now I\u2019m in my mid-30s it\u2019s real damn loud, and I still don\u2019t know.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cAll my friends are married and having kids, and while everyone\u2019s path is different, it\u2019s interesting to reflect on the decision. I have amazing female artist friends who are mothers, who make it work with touring, nannies and family. But figuring out how to have a baby in that mix is not nothing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cOn the other side of the fence, I don\u2019t want regrets. I see friends experiencing a love they say only comes from having a child, and I wonder if I\u2019ll feel that way someday. We have a finite window, which is unfair; I think, \u2018Will I regret it if I never have a baby?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><strong>You once said failure sets you free. Can you give us an example?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cWhen I was 16, still living in Canada, I got offered my first record deal \u2013 I thought it was everything I\u2019d ever wanted. But the guy who owned the label saved my career. He pushed the contract back and said, \u2018You\u2019re too talented. Go to the States and sign there.\u2019<\/p>\n<div class=\"\">\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">We just need to do what\u2019s cool for us, lean into what we love, and follow the joy<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cI felt like such a failure at the time. But I moved to Nashville, worked hard, and got another offer relatively quickly. Looking from the outside, it\u2019s incredible. But my biggest wins sometimes felt like failures, because I kept chasing the next thing, thinking it would make me feel grounded or secure. But those things don\u2019t come from career milestones; they come from within.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><strong>You also launched the Make You Movement. How has advocacy reshaped your relationship to the guitar?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cWhen I got into music I was inspired by artists who used their platforms to give back. That, to me, is the real point. Even as a guitar player, it makes everything matter more. I know music has the power to reach someone I\u2019ve never met on the other side of the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><strong>What do you want people to take away from <\/strong><strong>fence sitter<\/strong><strong>?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cI want them to get really honest with themselves; to listen to the questions that go on in their head. I think we often drown out that inner voice, but it\u2019s the best guiding voice we\u2019ll ever have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><strong>Knowing what you know now, what would you say to your eight-year-old self?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cI\u2019d tell her to stop listening to everybody else about the music she needs to make.
