Anthony Hopkins<\/strong><\/a> can still recall the exact moment he realized he was going down a dark path.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m always slightly reluctant to talk about it because I don\u2019t want to sound preachy,\u201d Hopkins told The New York Times<\/em><\/a> in an interview published on Saturday, October 25, detailing an incident that occurred on December 29, 1975. \u201cBut I was drunk and driving my car here in California in a blackout, no clue where I was going, when I realized that I could have killed somebody \u2014 or myself, which I didn\u2019t care about \u2014 and I realized that I was an alcoholic<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

He continued, \u201cI came to my senses and said to an ex-agent of mine at this party in Beverly Hills, \u2018I need help.\u2019 It was 11 o\u2019clock precisely \u2014 I looked at my watch \u2014 and this is the spooky part: Some deep powerful thought or voice spoke to me from inside and said: \u2018It\u2019s all over. Now you can start living. And it has all been for a purpose, so don\u2019t forget one moment of it.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

When asked for clarification on the \u201cvoice,\u201d Hopkins noted that it originated from \u201cdeep inside\u201d him.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut it was vocal, male, reasonable, like a radio voice,\u201d he explained. \u201cThe craving to drink was taken from me, or left<\/a>. Now I don\u2019t have any theories except divinity or that power that we all possess inside us that creates us from birth, life force, whatever it is. It\u2019s a consciousness, I believe. That\u2019s all I know.\u201d<\/p>\n

While promoting his upcoming memoir \u201cWe Did OK, Kid,\u201d out November 4, Hopkins opened up about his relationship with his estranged daughter \u2014 and his efforts to reconnect.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy wife, Stella [Arroyave]<\/strong>, sent an invitation to come and see us,\u201d he claimed. \u201cNot a word of response. So I think, OK, fine. I wish her well, but I\u2019m not going to waste blood over that. If you want to waste your life being in resentment, fine, go ahead. It\u2019s not in my ken. I could carry resentment over the past, but that\u2019s death. You\u2019re not living. You have to acknowledge one thing: that we are imperfect.\u201d<\/p>\n

He continued, \u201cWe\u2019re not saints. We\u2019re all sinners and saints or whatever we are. We do the best we can. Life is painful. Sometimes people get hurt. Sometimes we get hurt. But you can\u2019t live like that. You have to say, Get over it. And if you can\u2019t get over it, fine, good luck to you. I have no judgment. But I did what I could. So that\u2019s it. That\u2019s all I want to say.\u201d<\/p>\n

When asked whether he hopes his daughter reads his memoir, Hopkins replied, \u201cI\u2019m not going to answer that. No. I don\u2019t care.\u201d As the reporter shared that they would \u201cmove on\u201d from the subject, Hopkins admitted, \u201cPlease. I want you to. Because I don\u2019t want to hurt her.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hopkins has been married three times, initially tying the knot with Petronella Barker<\/strong> in 1966. The pair, who share daughter Abigail, split in 1972. The next year, Hopkins exchanged vows with Jennifer Lynton<\/strong>. After splitting from Lynton in 2002, Hopkins said \u201cI do\u201d with Arroyave in 2003.<\/p>\n
