Conan O\u2019Brien has millions of fans all across the world, at least<\/span> one of whom may have pushed Jay Leno down that Pennsylvania hill as payback for the\u00a0Tonight Show<\/i> fiasco<\/span><\/a>. Weirdly, it turns out that, for a very brief moment, the Conan fanbase also included disgraced president Richard Milhous Nixon.<\/span><\/p>\n

During a recent episode of the\u00a0Conan O\u2019Brien Needs a Friend<\/i> podcast, the host spoke with Tom Holland (not the Spider-Man guy) and Dominic Sandbrook from the podcast\u00a0The Rest Is History<\/i>. During their discussion of history, Nixon\u2019s name came up, prompting O\u2019Brien to share a story from the early days of his\u00a0Late Night<\/i> run.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/strong>My show, here in the States, began in September of 1993,\u201d O\u2019Brien recalled. \u201cAnd a reporter asked me, \u2018Who would your favorite comedy guest be?\u2019 And I said, \u2018Richard Nixon,\u2019 because Richard Nixon was still alive.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

O\u2019Brien wasn\u2019t joking, he was legitimately interested in Nixon\u2019s unwitting role in the history of modern comedy. \u201cHe was the face of comedy for about a good 12 years in our comedy,\u201d the host explained. \u201cComedians were obsessed with him. He was a very fun guy to have sport with, and he obsessed every comedy writer for a huge chunk of modern American history.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSo I wanted to talk to Richard Nixon,\u201d he continued. \u201cAnd then he passed away. I started in September, I think he died in maybe March\u201d \u2014 it was actually April \u2014 \u201cand I thought, \u2018There goes my chance.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

O\u2019Brien even shared his desire to interview Nixon while slowly dying during his\u00a0<\/span>famous\u00a0Hot Ones<\/i> appearance.\u00a0<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n

But the big shocker here is that O\u2019Brien\u2019s interest in Nixon was something of a two-way street. \u201cI\u2019m going to brag here for a moment,\u201d he said to his podcast guests. \u201cOne of Nixon\u2019s biographers who knew him is a woman named Monica Crowley, who has written a lot about Nixon in (the book\u00a0Nixon in Winter<\/i>) late in his career. She told me that Nixon, at the very end of his life, was flipping around \u2014 he was interested in television. He liked to watch television. And I premiered, and he watched our first episode. And then she said that he liked it, and told her, \u2018I like it, it\u2019s madcap. It\u2019s madcap!\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Now O\u2019Brien wants \u201cMonica Crowley to write that down so that it\u2019s part of the official record.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Who knows, maybe one day we\u2019ll get a special edition of\u00a0All the President\u2019s Men<\/i> with a new epilogue all about Nixon\u2019s post-Watergate late-night TV viewing habits.<\/span><\/p>\n
