Chris Christie<\/a> can now add \u201cfilm critic\u201d to his resume, alongside other venerable titles like \u201cformer New Jersey governor,\u201d and \u201ctwo-time presidential also-ran.\u201d<\/p>\n Christie was recently given the opportunity to review \u201dSpringsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere\u201d<\/a> for The Free Press, the commentary site recently acquired by CBS News.<\/p>\n \u201cAs the 55th Governor of New Jersey, it is just another one of the great opportunities the job has given me,\u201d Christie wrote in a Friday social media post<\/a> sharing the review.<\/p>\n Gubernatorial bona fides aside, Christie is an avowed Springsteen superfan<\/a>, so it makes sense that The Free Press would come to him with this assignment.<\/p>\n Even less surprising is the fact that, in response, Christie cranked out less of a movie review and more of a 1,300-word love letter to the Boss that reads like a man confessing his sins at the altar of Asbury Park.<\/p>\n The headline: \u201cBruce Springsteen Has Done It Again.\u201d The subtext: \u201cPlease, Bruce, text me back.\u201d<\/p>\n Christie opens with a disclaimer that he\u2019s \u201cnot objective\u201d about Springsteen, sharing that the number of concerts he\u2019s now attended has ticked north of 170. (He does not address that it\u2019s long been less clear<\/a> if those mushy feelings are reciprocated.)<\/p>\n What follows is a praise song for the new Springsteen biopic, filtered through the lens of a man who seems convinced the album \u201cNebraska\u201d personally saved his life and maybe could\u2019ve saved the Republican Party too, if anyone had listened.<\/p>\n In Christie\u2019s telling, the film is \u201cunexpected,\u201d \u201cdark,\u201d and \u201cdeeply emotional.\u201d He talks about the depiction of Bruce\u2019s relationship with his father and his struggle with depression in tones usually reserved for Vatican miracles.<\/p>\n But then he shifts abruptly to his own experience of watching the movie, and how it brought memories of the release of \u201cNebraska\u201d rushing back.<\/p>\n He recounts, with trembling reverence, the time he waited in line at a Delaware record shop to buy the album at midnight, only to discover it wasn\u2019t full of stadium anthems but \u201ca lone acoustic guitar and the depressing lyrics about a mass murderer.\u201d<\/p>\n Chris, that\u2019s the album. That\u2019s the whole point.<\/p>\n But \u201cDeliver Me from Nowhere,\u201d Christie goes on to say, has a lesson to impart. It teaches us to face our demons. He wants us to feel Bruce\u2019s pain, to see ourselves in his journey and triumph. He\u2019s moved by the scene where Jon Landau (Jeremy Strong) declares, \u201cIn this office, my office, we believe in Bruce Springsteen.\u201d You can almost see Christie whispering that line to his reflection in a diner window.<\/p>\n And yet there\u2019s something almost sweet about it. Christie\u2019s not wrong that \u201cNebraska\u201d is Bruce at his most raw and vulnerable. It\u2019s just funny that a guy who once shut down a beach for everyone but himself<\/a> wants to talk to us about loneliness.<\/p>\n He\u2019s not wrong: In a way, Bruce Springsteen has done it again.
