Looking back, it&#8217;s clear there was some inherent racism in the moment, but there was <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/chicago.suntimes.com\/2019\/4\/30\/18620694\/from-1991-when-violence-erupted-at-john-singleton-s-film-boyz-n-the-hood\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:actually some real violence;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">actually some real violence<\/a> that occurred at a handful of showings. The news took that and ran with it, ratcheting up the rhetoric around the dangers of rap music, especially gangsta rap, which was already scaring the shit out of suburban America.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">For me, a 16-year-old suburban kid, that was all I needed to hear to want to see the movie badly. Between Dr. Dre\u2019s <em>The Chronic<\/em> and Nine Inch Nails\u2019 <em>The Downward Spiral<\/em>, Interscope was hammering two sides of the musical spectrum that were upending norms. In the midst of that came <em>Boyz N the Hood.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">It was easy for the local and national news to issue urgent dispatches about the fear of gang violence at the movie\u2019s screenings. Black directors and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cinemablend.com\/streaming-news\/celebrate-black-voices-on-streaming-what-to-watch-on-netflix-hulu-and-more\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Black voices in Hollywood;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Black voices in Hollywood<\/a> were hardly the norm; we basically had Spike Lee, Mario Van Peebles, and not many others at the time, until Singleton came along with this masterpiece. The media, never ones to shy away from fear-mongering, played up the scattered examples of violence at the theaters showing <em>Boyz N The Hood<\/em>, and America \u2013 specifically white America \u2013 recoiled. Song On The Big Screen, But That Isn\u2019t What I Got<\/h2>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">For me, well, I loved Dre\u2019s earlier work with Ice Cube and company in N.W.A. I would blast that as I drove my own suburban neighborhood, feeling, well, defiant. When I heard about <em>Boyz N the Hood<\/em>, starring Ice Cube himself, I knew I had to see it. All the talk of gang violence at the theater made me believe even more that I was going to see one of Cube\u2019s rap songs come to life on film.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Anyone who has seen the movie, which I think is one of the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/entertainment\/100-best-movies-1990s-232341343.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:best movies of the \u201890s;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\">best movies of the \u201890s<\/a>, knows it is <em>not<\/em> an N.W.A. song come to life. It doesn\u2019t glamorize drug dealing or gang life (not that N.W.A. lyrics really do, either, but in my naive ears, they did). It speaks bluntly and honestly about \u201cwhat\u2019s goin\u2019 on in the hood,\u201d as Cube\u2019s character Doughboy explains in the final scene. It\u2019s a powerful statement about life in South Central L.A. and neighborhoods like it around the country, as well as the importance of <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/entertainment\/articles\/ive-thinking-boyz-n-hood-110300232.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:being a strong father;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" class=\"link  yahoo-link\">being a strong father<\/a> in the face of adversity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cinemablend.com\/news\/2566481\/stephen-king-boyz-n-the-hood-first-time-f-bomb\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:It is an incredible movie;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">It is an incredible movie<\/a>, with powerful performances from Laurence Fishburne, Ice Cube, Cuba Gooding, Jr., and the rest of the cast, that includes actors like Regina King, Nia Long, Morris Chestnut, and Angela Bassett.
