The controversy surrounding Ellis&#8217;s <em>American Psycho<\/em> stems from its extreme graphic violence, including torture and sexual assault, and its portrayal of misogyny, racism and homophobia. Critics condemned the book for what they saw as its hateful content and for being a gratuitous depiction of violence, leading to boycotts and a last-minute publisher change.
