IT HAPPENED ALL AT ONCE<\/strong>, which is usually how growing up goes. For Aaron Pierre, it was the summer he turned 14 years old. His family lived in government-owned council estate housing in West Croydon, an urban neighborhood in South London. He was a small kid, short and wiry. Sensitive too, with big feelings and big dreams. Anything he did, really, he did big. He discovered he could run fast, so he trained at a local sports club, putting his energy into the 100-meter sprint because it famously crowns the fastest man in the world.<\/p>\nHis first job was at his mom\u2019s friend\u2019s hair salon. \u201cI would take their jackets. I would offer them a magazine and a hot or cold beverage of their choice,\u201d he says. He was a teenage boy working as a beauty shop concierge, but even that<\/em> he did big. When his proprietress asked if he would be interested in doing hair, he said yes. And he meant<\/em> it. \u201cI thought, I\u2019d love to show <\/em>these very kind ladies that I can belong <\/em>there too<\/em>. But\u2026\u201d He did one shampoo and was kindly asked to go back to hanging coats. \u201c\u2026evidently I couldn\u2019t. How embarrassing for me!\u201d<\/p>\n\n

<\/button>By the end of that summer, Pierre had grown exponentially. Today he stands at 6’3″, with broad shoulders and an imposing frame, and it wasn\u2019t much different then. Suddenly, the small kid was as big as his feelings. He felt out of place in his own body. His clothes didn\u2019t fit right. He hunched down and rolled his shoulders forward. He lowered his head and lowered his voice, which had also dropped into a booming baritone. He did everything he could to make himself small again.<\/p>\n\nTrack went out the window. Pierre discovered acting, something his father had experience in, soon after. Over time, he worked to undo all the physical strictures he\u2019d imposed on himself. He let himself be big. He let the feelings be big too, incongruous though they were with the vessel that carried them. It\u2019s something he credits to his family, and particularly the women in it. \u201cThey taught me the strength of feeling what you felt,\u201d he says, \u201cfeeling it visibly, and owning it enough to speak on it.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Aaron Pierre I meet at the Dog & Bull pub one September afternoon in London strides with self-confidence but is wary of his surroundings. I\u2019ve staked out a booth, but he does a second sweep of the joint to make sure it\u2019s the most discreet table in the place before settling in. Once we\u2019re seated, Pierre creates an atmosphere of intimacy by sheer force of will.<\/p>\n
He speaks deliberately and softly\u2014leaning in closer and closer to the iPhone I\u2019m using to record our conversation as the pub fills up over the next few hours. He reaches over to graze an arm or a shoulder when he wants to emphasize a point. Sometimes his disconcertingly green eyes flash to reveal that whatever he\u2019s saying so softly he means deeply.<\/p>\n\n\n

Our bubble is pierced only once, when a man cautiously approaches to ask, \u201cAaron Pierre? Rebel Ridge<\/em>?\u201d When he gets his confirmation, he launches into an appreciation of the 2024 movie in which Pierre plays an ex-Marine who epitomizes the saying \u201cSpeak softly and carry a big stick.\u201d<\/p>\nRebel Ridge<\/em> became a breakout moment for Pierre, a showcase of not only his action star potential but his star potential, period. In 2026, he stars in HBO\u2019s Lan<\/em>terns<\/em>, the next entry in director James Gunn\u2019s high-profile overhaul of the DC cinematic universe. He\u2019s also been cast in the next Star Wars<\/em> movie, Starfighter<\/em>, in an ensemble with Ryan Gosling and Amy Adams. And just days before our interview, Pierre was on his way home from shooting Love of Your Life<\/em>, a romantic drama with Margaret Qualley and Patrick Schwarzenegger, when he saw himself on the side of a bus in a new ad campaign for Hugo Boss. \u201cThat was trippy,\u201d he says. \u201cThere were the buses I used to run for and miss!\u201d<\/p>\nPierre isn\u2019t sure he\u2019s ready for the attention that comes with it all. \u201cI\u2019m a very private person. But I\u2019ve been actively encouraging myself to step out of my comfort zone.\u201d Luckily, exploring discomfort seems to be what drives his best work.<\/p>\n
You see that in the much-lauded indie Brother<\/em>, in which Pierre plays a teenager grappling with his masculinity, reflecting the anxieties of his own adolescence, of growing up faster than you want. \u201cWithin my community, young men can grow to the size of an adult at a very young age,\u201d he says. \u201cAnd sadly, many parts of the world engage with those young men inappropriately. They engage with children as adults; they engage with boys as men.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

When Barry Jenkins was casting his critically acclaimed series The Under<\/em>ground Railroad<\/em>, he wanted someone for the role of runaway slave Caesar who could embody the experience of living one life in your body and another out in the world. \u201cCaesar is a character living under conditions where he needs to, in some ways, make himself small. Aaron really got that,\u201d Jenkins says. \u201cI imagine he\u2019s always conscious of how much of himself he is releasing into the air around him. He is this chiseled, statuesque guy with a baritone voice, so if he\u2019s shouting, someone around him might assume that the register of his voice is intended to mean one thing\u2014to intimidate or to subdue\u2014when that is the furthest thing that Aaron would ever want anyone to experience. It\u2019s unfair, but it\u2019s just the truth that he\u2019s always had to gauge how is <\/em>this person responding to the <\/em>thing I\u2019m putting out?<\/em> It\u2019s a blessing and a curse, but it\u2019s made him a great performer.\u201d<\/p>\nThrough all that experience of exploring discomfort, Pierre has come out the other side more comfortable in his body, in his mind, and in anticipating what\u2019s ahead.<\/p>\n\n\n

I<\/strong>T HAPPENED IN FITS AND STARTS, <\/strong>which is usually how growing into the man you want to be goes. Pierre did a stint at an acting school in Toronto before returning home to train at the prestigious London Academy of Music & Dramatic Art. He landed some small roles in British television and on Syfy\u2019s Superman <\/em>prequel series Krypton<\/em> for two seasons before its cancellation. Then in 2018, he made his professional onstage debut at the Shakespeare\u2019s Globe theater in a production of Othello<\/em> starring Andr\u00e9 Holland. Pierre played Cassio, right hand to Othello and the target of much of the play\u2019s manipulations and machinations, a character who can come off as a tractable pawn but when played by Pierre had a spark that earned him his place on the chessboard. Critics noticed him, and that\u2019s when Barry Jenkins did too. He was in the audience to see his friend Holland, who\u2019d recently starred in Jenkins\u2019s Oscar-winning movie Moonlight<\/em>. Standing in the pit of the Globe\u2019s open-air theater, looking up at a stage crowned by the night sky, Jenkins couldn\u2019t stop watching the rookie who towered above the rest of the cast.<\/p>\n\u201cI went to see Andr\u00e9, and then here was this wonderful discovery, this guy, Aaron Pierre, who I\u2019d never heard of,\u201d Jenkins recalls. \u201cHe was larger-than-life. Something just stood out to me. I didn\u2019t know what it was that I would end up making with him, but I just thought, This is some<\/em>one that I\u2019m going to work with<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n

After the show, Jenkins found Pierre\u2019s Twitter handle and sent him a DM. Pierre was riding the London Underground home and emerged to the ding-ding-ding <\/em>of Jenkins\u2019s messages. At first, he thought someone was pulling a prank on him. But once he realized the account was the real deal, the two started chatting. It wasn\u2019t quite the kind of life-changing moment you hear about in Hollywood fairy tales, like Chris Pratt being discovered at a Bubba Gump Shrimp Company restaurant or Charlize Theron landing a talent manager after he\u2019d watched her arguing with a bank teller. But it was still a shot in the well-toned arm. \u201cSometimes you\u2019re out in the world and you see someone doing strong work,\u201d Jenkins says, \u201cand you just want to acknowledge it: \u2018I want you to know that I really respect what you\u2019re doing.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\nJenkins had recently started developing The Underground Railroad<\/em>, a miniseries adaptation of Colson Whitehead\u2019s Pulitzer Prize\u2013winning novel, something he mentioned to Pierre. But Pierre didn\u2019t make a play for the project. Instead, he remembers, \u201cI said something along the lines of \u2018Thank you for taking the time and the energy to come and see the show. I\u2019m glad you enjoyed it.\u2019\u201d At the time, it was just enough for Pierre to feel seen. \u201cMy internal voice said, Whatever you\u2019re <\/em>doing, just keep your head down, stay <\/em>locked in, because someone you respect <\/em>has valued your contribution<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\nPierre eventually went through several rounds of auditions for The Underground <\/em>Railroad<\/em>, sending Jenkins self-recorded tapes from London. The imposing figure Jenkins saw onstage, even shrunken to the confines of a laptop screen, had the undeniable presence he was looking for in Caesar, the slave who goes on the run with the story\u2019s main character, Cora.<\/p>\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019re dealing with characters, enslaved people, who don\u2019t have control over their voice, don\u2019t have control over their bodies. The whole social framework they\u2019re living under is designed to diminish their life force,\u201d Jenkins says. \u201cBut I fully believe there were enslaved people that you could encounter and there would just be no denying their life force, the inner strength, the intelligence, the power of their person. I was looking for that\u2014someone who could just physically appear on-screen and there would be no denying that there was an absolutely rampant life force within that person.\u201d<\/p>\n
By 2021, Pierre had performed at the Globe, one of the most historically significant stages in the world. He\u2019d shot The <\/em>Underground Railroad<\/em> and was waiting for it to be released. Along the way, he\u2019d picked up a few more gigs that showed his range\u2014from a rap star called \u201cMid-Sized Sedan\u201d in M. Night Shyamalan\u2019s Old<\/em> to the lead of one of August Wilson\u2019s most challenging plays, King Hedley II<\/em>. He was, by all outward indications, on the verge of a big break.<\/p>\nHe was also on the verge of a breakdown. Pierre was flat broke and in massive debt from loans totaling an amount he won\u2019t even utter now. He\u2019d earned enough to find his own apartment and quickly blew through the rest. \u201cMoney doesn\u2019t last forever, especially when it\u2019s your first little bit of money,\u201d he says. He \u201ccame from humble beginnings anyway,\u201d so he knew how to be scrappy, though he didn\u2019t know just how many different ways he could prepare a baked potato until it was the only thing he could afford. (Answer: seven, one for each day of the week.) But it wasn\u2019t the high life he wanted; it was his sense of self. Pierre often says that his main criterion for success is earning his own respect. Did he have it? He wasn\u2019t so sure.<\/p>\n
\u201cI described myself as an actor, but I was unemployed with no upcoming opportunities,\u201d he says. \u201cI wrestled with whether I was delusional or committed.\u201d This wasn\u2019t high school track, and it certainly wasn\u2019t washing women\u2019s hair. This was his calling<\/em>, except nobody was calling. He turned inward. Though the greatest lesson of his upbringing had been to embrace his feelings \u201cand owning it enough to be able to speak on it,\u201d he was overridden by another instinct: the masculine urge to keep it all to yourself.<\/p>\nAs a \u201ccouncil estate kid\u201d who grew up in a neighborhood known for its diversity as well as its income disparity, \u201cI was hyper-aware that everybody else was also dealing with hardship,\u201d Pierre says. \u201cI never wanted to be a burden.\u201d So he became isolated when every cell in his body was telling him to ask for support. \u201cEven at that challenging moment, I was so determined to not contribute to the weight anybody else was already carrying.\u201d Here his eyes flash like they do, this time to reveal that we aren\u2019t talking about bank balances or bum acting gigs; we\u2019re talking about shame. \u201cDo you know what\u2019s so interesting?\u201d he asks as he leans forward, speaking more softly than usual. \u201cWhat I just told you about that\u2026challenging<\/em> moment in my life? I only revealed that to one of the closest people in my life last week.<\/p>\n\n\n

\u201cLearning that you don\u2019t need to put everything on your back\u2014I learned that later than most. That actually what is fundamentally human is that we share the load. We alleviate each other\u2019s burdens; we guide each other through storms. It took me a long time, a really long time. I don\u2019t want to get emotional again, but I\u2019m finally there, and I\u2019m doing everything within my power to not revert back to what was my default for so long. And I\u2019m confident that I won\u2019t,\u201d he says. \u201cIt feels like a moment of growth within my manhood, a moment of growth within my adulthood.\u201d<\/p>\n
Around that time, Pierre applied for a courier job delivering packages around the city. He told himself it would be great, that he was thrilled, that he would be out and about, he\u2019d meet people, he\u2019d make the most of that opportunity for human connection. Then a couple of weeks before his job interview, Pierre says, \u201cEverything happened all at once.\u201d<\/p>\n
Jenkins came calling again, this time to offer Pierre the chance to voice the role of Mufasa in the Lion King<\/em> prequel. Director Jeremy Saulnier, known for his brutal thrillers Green Room<\/em> and Blue Ruin<\/em>, gave him the lead in Rebel Ridge<\/em>. The Underground <\/em>Railroad <\/em>would air to wide acclaim. Gina Prince-Bythewood, the director of Love <\/em>& Basketball<\/em>, would see it and cast Pierre as Malcolm X in the bio-series Genius: <\/em>MLK\/X<\/em>. He joined the MCU\u2019s long-gestating Blade<\/em> movie.<\/p>\nHis fallow period over, Pierre would move to Louisiana to shoot Rebel Ridge. <\/em>To him, the role of Marine veteran Terry Richmond\u2014or, as Pierre calls him in a rare moment of animation, \u201cTerry-fucking<\/em>-Richmond!\u201d\u2014was a new kind of action character, one whose emotional intelligence quotient was as essential to his power as his muscle mass index.<\/p>\nPierre went through an extensive boot camp to learn skills taught in the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program. But Pierre loves a boot camp. He\u2019s been boxing since 2016 and training in Brazilian jiu-jitsu since 2019. He won his first jiu-jitsu tournament gold medal in 2023. The action scenes he had down. It was the calm before the action in which he invested the most. He wanted Terry\u2019s strength to be \u201cso quiet that you would be forgiven for thinking that he had none,\u201d Pierre says. \u201cI decided I needed to be the loudest quietest person in the room\u2014someone who, when he steps into a room, he steps in discreetly, he steps in almost undetected, but something in the air has shifted.\u201d<\/p>\n

Critics loved it. Viewers loved it. That guy at the pub loved it. Pierre won an NAACP Image Award for his performance; the movie won an Emmy for Outstanding Television Movie. He\u2019d finally earned the industry\u2019s attention. More importantly, he\u2019d earned back his own respect.<\/p>\n\n\n

IT HAPPENED SLOWLY, <\/strong>which is usually how, well, life goes. Like when the challenges of stardom start creeping up on you: the public disappointments, the public scrutiny, the public everything.<\/p>\nWhile Pierre was filming Rebel Ridge<\/em>, he experienced his first public disappointment (or at least his most high-profile one) when it was announced that he\u2019d been let go from Blade<\/em>, a much anticipated but troubled production that flounders in development hell to this day.<\/p>\n\u201cI remember being cast in Blade<\/em> and feeling elated. But something I learned during that time was that until you step foot on the set, you haven\u2019t commenced work,\u201d Pierre says. \u201cIt just took a different creative direction, and I was no longer a part of it. You have to accept that.\u201d<\/p>\nPierre will get another chance to add to a storied superhero legacy in HBO\u2019s Lan<\/em>terns<\/em>. Kyle Chandler plays Hal Jordan, for decades the most prominent comic book character to hold the title of Green Lantern. Pierre plays John Stewart, the first Black comic character to take up the mantle. He was introduced in 1971 and would later become the defining Green Lantern for a new generation because of the early-2000s animated series Justice League<\/em>.<\/p>\nChris Mundy, the Lanterns<\/em> showrunner, known for writing for prestige crime thrillers like Ozark<\/em>, Bloodline<\/em>, and True <\/em>Detective<\/em>, says the series is \u201cas much of a buddy cop show as a superhero show.\u201d And like any good buddy cop show, Hal and John are opposing forces. \u201cOur show is in a lot of ways about replacement\u2014when should someone step aside and when is it time for the next person to take the reins?\u201d Mundy says. \u201cThat push and pull between those two characters is really important. So much of the power that John has is by not taking the bait, understanding that you lose your power if you\u2019re yelling and screaming. That\u2019s what we\u2019re trying to convey: He knows he belongs, so he doesn\u2019t have to overcompensate. There\u2019s a real balance there that\u2019s just innately inside of Aaron. He\u2019s big. He\u2019s an intimidating presence just physically. But there\u2019s a softness to him too. There\u2019s a thoughtfulness. You can\u2019t teach that.\u201d<\/p>\nJohn Stewart is a revered comic figure, particularly to Black readers. \u201cFor me, the character just radiates strength and fortitude,\u201d Pierre says. \u201cThat hunger to be the best version of yourself, which also holds you accountable when you\u2019re not.\u201d And on the off chance Pierre doesn\u2019t hold himself accountable, comics fans will. That\u2019s the flip side of signing on to a beloved IP\u2014you\u2019re not the only one who feels ownership of it. \u201cAaron felt a responsibility, especially as a Black man playing this particular role, to make sure he really understood him and brought him to life,\u201d Mundy says. \u201cI think fans will see the reverence he has for it, and that goes a long way.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

Then there\u2019s the public\u2026every thing. Pierre is leaning into it, selectively. On his press tour for Mufasa: The <\/em>Lion King<\/em>, he appeared as a guest on The Jennifer Hudson <\/em>Show<\/em>. There he took part in the now-famous \u201cspirit tunnel,\u201d a preshow ritual in which the show\u2019s staff line the hallway, singing and psyching up their guest as they dance from the dressing rooms to the stage. The tradition has become a social media sensation, with celebrities from Michelle Obama to Bowen Yang dancing to the tune of millions of TikTok views. Pierre\u2019s slow, confident-with-a-touch-of-bashful gyrations were viewed 75 million times on Tik-Tok alone and 4.2 billion-with-a-B times across all platforms. When I ask Pierre about his foray into Internet virality, he just says, \u201cThat\u2019s me. That\u2019s Aaron.\u201d<\/p>\nBut he\u2019s not just Aaron anymore either. Earlier this year, Pierre started dating singer and actress Teyana Taylor, and the two have quickly become a young Hollywood power couple. They recently appeared together on the red carpet for the premiere of Taylor\u2019s movie One Battle After Another<\/em>, from director Paul Thomas Anderson. It was their most high-profile outing yet as a couple and was met with much online fanfare. It was easier than Pierre expected. \u201cBeing on the red carpet with Teyana was a joy,\u201d he says. \u201cAnd so easy to do because I was supporting someone who I love. Anything that feels right feels easy.\u201d<\/p>\nBut other aspects of living your life under a spotlight are not as easy. Pierre has a young son he keeps out of the public eye. Other than a post he made on Instagram in September showing his son\u2019s hand in his, Pierre hasn\u2019t shared so much as a name or exact age. To him, the responsibilities of fatherhood override the responsibilities of modern fame, where stars are expected to invite fans into every aspect of their lives. \u201cBeing a father is my greatest joy and my greatest privilege. He\u2019s my everything. But I am fiercely protective of my son and his privacy,\u201d he says. \u201cEverybody has respected that, and the gratitude I feel for that is immeasurable.\u201d<\/p>\n
Pierre uses that word a lot: \u201cgratitude.\u201d It\u2019s every actor\u2019s favorite noun, but Pierre is the kind of guy who means what he says. \u201cNothing is lost on me. That\u2019s why I articulate my gratitude so often, because I know what it can be like when none of this is here,\u201d he says. \u201cThere\u2019s no film opportunity, there\u2019s no theater opportunity, there\u2019s no television opportunity, there\u2019s no magazine cover.\u201d It\u2019s not like Pierre needs to develop a gratitude practice. He already knows from experience how painfully fast and agonizingly slow the road ahead will be. So give the guy a moment to be grateful. He\u2019s not sprinting anymore.<\/p>\n
