Frankie Muniz<\/a> is opening up about why he hasn\u2019t spoken to his Agent Cody Banks<\/a> costar Hilary Duff<\/a> since they made the 2003 film.<\/p>\nMuniz, 39, opened up about his life as a child star in the early 2000s on the Sept. 2 episode of The Joe Vulpis Podcast<\/a>. Muniz told the host, \u201cHilary Duff was probably one of my first friends when I moved to LA to film Malcolm [in the Middle]<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\nHe remembered that, at the time, lots of child actors lived in a specific apartment complex in Burbank, Calif. While he told his mom<\/a> he didn\u2019t want to live there, lots of his friends did, and she often dropped him off to hang out. Those friends introduced him to Duff, 38.<\/p>\n\u201cWe became really, really good friends. We had a really great relationship for a long time,\u201d he said. Lizzie McGuire premiered in 2001, a year after Malcolm in the Middle, and in 2002, Duff asked him to appear on an episode playing himself.<\/p>\n

Then Muniz said he was going to tell a story for the first time. \u201cI don’t know if I want to tell it, but maybe I will. It’s been a long time.\u201d<\/p>\n
The actor remembered, \u201cI was on the set of Lizzie McGuire, and I was in Hilary\u2019s dressing room and her mom was there.\u201d He called her mom, Susan, \u201cthe epitome of a stage mom.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cShe was intense. Hilary was so cool, we had an awesome relationship, but her mom was super intense,\u201d he remembered. He said his mom was \u201cthe opposite\u201d and would \u201chide\u201d in the corner on set. \u201c[She] didn\u2019t want to be in the way.\u201d<\/p>\n
Muniz emphasized, \u201cI’ve actually never told this story, and I might get in trouble for it, but I don’t care. I’m 40.\u201d He continued, \u201c So her mom was like, \u2018Do you know what you’re doing this summer? What are you doing this summer?\u2019 And I go, \u2018Oh, I’m filming this movie where I’m playing like a junior James Bond. It’s called Agent Cody Banks.\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n
Susan asked if there was \u201ca girl\u201d in the movie that would be good for Hilary. Muniz was noncommittal, though he knew in his contract he got to say who was going to play the role. He remembered that they had been interested in Kristin Kreuk, who was starring on Smallville, and he \u201creally thought\u201d the role of Cody\u2019s love interest, Natalie Connors, would go to her.<\/p>\n
The \u201cnext day,\u201d Muniz saw Susan on set again in her daughter\u2019s dressing room. \u201cAnd her mom’s like, \u2018Guess what? We’re going to be spending the summer together.\u2019 \u201d Muniz assumed Duff had booked another movie that was filming in Vancouver, Canada. Susan told him, \u201cNo, she’s doing Cody Banks with you… They signed the contract last night.\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n
“The movie you knew nothing about yesterday?\u201d Muniz remembered thinking. He called his agents, who said that \u201ccalls were made\u201d and they knew he and Duff were close. \u201cThey just assumed it was fine,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cNeedless to say, I wasn’t thrilled about it. And not because I didn’t want it to be Hilary,\u201d he said, but because the studio had gone around him. \u201cI don’t know how much I want to say. I’m trying to think about it because I’ve already said way too much,\u201d Muniz said.<\/p>\n

Muniz said he had an \u201camazing time\u201d on set filming with Angie Harmon<\/a>, who played Agent Ronica Miles and became a \u201cbest friend.\u201d \u201cAnd I was very sad when Hilary’s mom would come on set,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\u201cAnd if I told you I’ve never talked to Hilary since the last day of filming. I’ve not said one word to her since then. So that’s the truth of that. No one knows about my Hilary Duff story,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
He said they were \u201cprofessional\u201d on set, but there was \u201cawkwardness\u201d because there was a \u201csmall dating element\u201d that \u201cwasn’t happening anymore,\u201d but his main issue was with her mom.<\/p>\n
But looking back, he said, \u201cI regret not just continuing to be friends with her because we had a great friendship for such a long time, and her mom… it pissed me off.\u201d<\/p>\n
As for the future, Muniz said of Duff, \u201cI would love to catch up with her.\u201d He added of the Agent Cody Banks casting drama, \u201cI would love to even talk about that because I’m sure she doesn’t know any of that happened.\u201d<\/p>\n
