Another big film and TV studio is settling into New Jersey. <\/p>\n
Paramount Skydance<\/a> has just signed a 10-year lease for Bayonne\u2019s 1888 Studios<\/a>.<\/p>\n Paramount is set to occupy more than 285,000 square feet of the planned 58-acre facility, which will have 1.1 million square feet of production space and 23 smart sound stages.<\/p>\n Among the amenities promised at 1888 Studios: lighting and and grip facilities, offices, postproduction space, a five-story parking garage and 22-acre water backlot.<\/p>\n Why is the studio called 1888? <\/p>\n That\u2019s the year Thomas Edison<\/a> filed a preliminary patent for an early motion picture camera.<\/p>\n READ MORE: <\/b>N.J. town approves new film studio in nod to Jersey movie history<\/b><\/a> <\/b><\/p>\n Edison opened Black Maria<\/a>, the first film studio, in West Orange<\/a> in 1893. Later, he opened Edison Studios.<\/p>\n Funnily enough, it was Edison\u2019s trust with George Eastman \u2014 which charged licensing fees to use cameras made by Edison and film from Eastman Kodak \u2014 that drove filmmakers and the New Jersey-based movie industry<\/a> to Hollywood<\/a> in the first place.<\/p>\n The architecture firm Gensler designed 1888 Studios \u201cto evoke the imagery of Golden Age Hollywood,\u201d per an announcement of the Paramount lease. <\/p>\n In renderings of the studio released in 2022, palm trees accompany the Hollywood-flavored architecture.<\/p>\n The announcement touted New Jersey\u2019s tax incentives for film and TV production.<\/p>\n Those incentives have increasingly driven both large studio titles and indie films to the Garden State. In shock move, so is the late-night franchise.<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n The company Togus Urban Renewal is developing 1888 Studios. <\/p>\n \u201cBy keeping American productions at home, the project, which will be constructed by union workers, will generate thousands of jobs and additional opportunities for New Jersey\u2019s small businesses,\u201d Arpad \u201cArki\u201d Busson, chairman of Togus Urban Renewal, said in a statement, calling New Jersey \u201ca true cornerstone of global production.\u201d<\/p>\n Gov. Phil Murphy said the commitment from Paramount reflects \u201cthe incredible momentum of our state\u2019s creative sector, solidifying our reputation as a global powerhouse in the entertainment industry.\u201d <\/p>\n In 2018, Murphy reinstated New Jersey\u2019s film tax credit program<\/a> after former Gov. Chris Christie let the program expire and vetoed bills that would\u2019ve revived the production incentives. <\/p>\n Jimmy Davis, mayor of Bayonne, called the studio a welcome addition to the city\u2019s \u201congoing renaissance.\u201d <\/p>\n \u201cThis is a big win for Bayonne, Hudson County, and the state of New Jersey,\u201d he said in a statement. <\/p>\n State Sen.
