{"id":2122290,"date":"2025-10-29T10:04:03","date_gmt":"2025-10-29T10:04:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/?p=2122290"},"modified":"2025-10-29T10:04:03","modified_gmt":"2025-10-29T10:04:03","slug":"paramount-set-to-begin-laying-off-1000-workers-in-first-round-of-cuts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/paramount-set-to-begin-laying-off-1000-workers-in-first-round-of-cuts\/","title":{"rendered":"Paramount set to begin laying off 1,000 workers in first round of cuts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div data-element=\"story-body\" data-subscriber-content=\"\">\n<p>Paramount on Wednesday was expected to cut 1,000 employees, the first wave of a deep staff reduction planned since David Ellison took the helm of the entertainment company in August.<\/p>\n<p>People familiar with the matter but not authorized to comment said the layoffs will be felt throughout the company, including at CBS, CBS News, Comedy Central and other cable channels as well as the historic Melrose Avenue film studio. <\/p>\n<p>Another 1,000 jobs are expected to be cut at a later date, bringing the total reduction to about 10% of Paramount\u2019s workforce, sources said.<\/p>\n<p>The move <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/business\/story\/2025-08-13\/david-ellison-greets-reporters-at-paramount\">was expected<\/a>. Paramount\u2019s new owners \u2014 Ellison\u2019s Skydance Media and RedBird Capital Partners \u2014 had told investors they planned to <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/business\/story\/2025-07-25\/the-skydance-paramount-global-merger-is-approved-now-what\">eliminate more than $2 billion in expenses<\/a>, and Wednesday\u2019s workforce reduction was a preliminary step toward that goal. <\/p>\n<p>Paramount has been shedding staff for years. <\/p>\n<p>More than <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/business\/story\/2025-06-10\/paramount-lays-off-several-hundred-employees\">800 people \u2014 or about 3.5% of the company\u2019s workforce \u2014 were laid off in June, <\/a> prior to the Ellison family takeover. At the time, Paramount\u2019s management attributed the cuts to the decline of cable television subscriptions and an increased emphasis on bulking up its streaming TV business. In 2024, the company eliminated 2,000 positions, or 15% of its staff. <\/p>\n<p>Longtime CBS News journalist <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/business\/story\/2025-10-27\/cbs-evening-news-co-anchor-john-dickerson-will-leave-the-network-at-the-end-of-the-year\">John Dickerson announced earlier this week<\/a> that he would exit in December. The co-anchor of the \u201cCBS Evening News,\u201d Dickerson has been a familiar network face for more than 15 years, completing tours at <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/business\/story\/2025-03-21\/cbs-mornings-is-leaving-its-times-square-studio\">\u201cCBS This Morning\u201d<\/a> and the Sunday public affairs show \u201cFace the Nation.\u201d He was<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/business\/story\/2024-08-01\/john-dickerson-maurice-dubois-named-anchors-of-cbs-evening-news-norah-odonnell\"> named the network\u2019s evening news co-anchor<\/a> in January <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/business\/story\/2024-08-01\/john-dickerson-maurice-dubois-named-anchors-of-cbs-evening-news-norah-odonnell\">alongside Maurice DuBois<\/a> to succeed Norah O\u2019Donnell. The revamp, designed in part to save money, led to a ratings decline.<\/p>\n<p>The Paramount layoffs are the latest sign of contraction across the entertainment and tech sectors.<\/p>\n<p> Amazon said this week it was <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/business\/story\/2025-10-28\/amazon-cuts-14-000-corporate-jobs-as-spending-on-artificial-intelligence-accelerates\">eliminating roughly 14,000 corporate jobs<\/a> amid its embrace of artificial intelligence to perform more functions. Last week, Facebook parent company <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/business\/story\/2025-10-22\/meta-is-cutting-600-roles-in-its-ai-division\"><u>Meta<\/u><\/a> disclosed that it was cutting 600 jobs in its AI division. <\/p>\n<p>Last week, cable and broadband provider Charter Corp., which operates the Spectrum service, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/business\/story\/2025-10-22\/charter-spectrum-layoffs-1200-workers-cut\">eliminated 1,200 management jobs<\/a> around the country.<\/p>\n<p>Los Angeles\u2019 production economy in particular has been roiled by a falloff in local filming and cost-cutting at major media companies.<\/p>\n<p>As of August, about 112,000 people were employed in the Los Angeles region\u2019s motion picture and sound recording industries \u2014 the main category for film and television production. The data does not include everyone who works in the entertainment industry, such as those who work as independent contractors. <\/p>\n<p>That was roughly flat compared with the previous year, and down 27% compared with 2022 levels, when about 154,000 people were employed locally in the industry, according to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. <\/p>\n<p>The industry has struggled to rebound since the 2023 strikes by writers and actors, which led to a sharp pullback in studio spending following the era of so-called \u201cpeak TV,\u201d when<br \/>studios dramatically increased the pipeline of shows to build streaming platforms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou saw a considerable drop-off from the strikes and the aftermath,\u201d said Kevin Klowden, an executive director at Milken Institute Finance. \u201cThe question is, at what point do these workers exit the industry entirely?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Local film industry officials are expecting a production boost and an increase in work after California bolstered its film and television tax credits.<\/p>\n<p>But Southern California\u2019s bedrock industry is confronting other challenges, including shifting consumer habits and competition from social media platforms like YouTube and TikTok.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a larger concern in terms of the financial health of all the major operations in Hollywood,\u201d Klowden said. \u201cThere\u2019s a real concern about that level of competition, and what it means.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><em> \u2018 The preceding article may include information circulated by third parties \u2019 <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em> \u2018 Some details of this article were extracted from the following source www.latimes.com \u2019 <\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Paramount on Wednesday was expected to cut 1,000 employees, the first wave of a deep staff reduction planned since David Ellison took the helm of the entertainment company in August.
