King Juan Carlos of Spain has revealed the last words that his
\nonly son, King Felipe VI, said to him as he made his way into
\nexile.<\/p>\n

Juan Carlos, who ruled Spain from 1975 to 2014, left the country
\nin secrecy in August 2020 after a series of damaging allegations
\nabout his finances and his personal life. He had abdicated in June
\n2014 in favour of Felipe who had repeatedly tried to distance
\nhimself from the controversies surrounding his father.<\/p>\n

In his memoirs, to be published in France in November, King Juan
\nCarlos said his son used a telling phrase when the spoke for the
\nlast time ahead of that exile.<\/p>\n

He writes that he was already on the plane, set to leave Spain,
\nwhen he received a call from Felipe VI. Juan Carlos had left a
\nletter for him, telling him that he was leaving.<\/p>\n

In the book, King Juan Carlos said his son asked him \u201dwhere are
\nyou going, boss?\u201d as he prepared to leave.<\/p>\n

The former monarch then explains that he is often called \u2018boss\u2019
\nby people in his family although he says he doesn\u2019t believe he is
\nan authoritarian.<\/p>\n

King Felipe then asked his father if he was travelling to
\nLondon. Juan Carlos says the conversation ended with him telling
\nhis son, briefly, that he was actually headed to Abu Dhabi.<\/p>\n

Juan Carlos writes that the last words of that conversation were
\nhim telling Felipe VI to \u201dtake care of yourself\u201d.<\/p>\n

The decision of Juan Carlos to leave the
\ncountry he reigned over for almost four decades<\/a> was a shock and
\nit took several weeks for his final destination to be revealed. He
\nis claiming that his son knew his whereabouts from the very
\nbeginning.<\/p>\n

Spain\u2019s royals announced the exile with the publication of a
\nletter from Juan Carlos to Felipe VI in which the former monarch
\nsaid \u201da year ago, I expressed my desire not to carry out any
\nmore institutional duties. Today, guided by my desire to serve the
\nSpanish people as well as possible\u2026.I inform you of my considered
\ndecision to leave Spain for the time being.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Juan Carlos wrote in the letter that \u201dtaking into account
\nthe public reactions generated by some past events in my life, I
\nwish\u2026.to contribute to the facilitation of your work in the
\ncalmness that your high responsibility needs\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n

He concluded \u201dI always wanted the best for Spain and for the
\ncrown.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Juan Carlos remains in Abu Dhabi but has returned to Spain
\nseveral times, meeting Felipe VI privately. The two were also seen
\ntogether at the funeral of King Constantine II of Greece, brother
\nof Queen Sofia, Juan Carlos\u2019 wife and Felipe\u2019s mother.<\/p>\n

The memoir, Reconciliation, is set to be published in Spain in
\nDecember. However, it hits bookshelves in France next week and the
\npress there has been given a preview with headlines flowing from
\nthe material released.<\/p>\n
