A pensive Julian Schnabel had much to say about death and immortality in art when he screened his latest film, In The Hand of Dante<\/a>,<\/em> as the opening night film at Tribeca Festival Lisboa on Wednesday night in Lisbon, Portugal.<\/p>\n Schnabel, wearing his signature artist smock and fedora, during a post-screening Q&A discussed themes of art and the creative process, and argued artists create as a way to confront a fear of death. <\/p>\n More from The Hollywood Reporter<\/strong><\/p>\n \u201cWhether you\u2019re an actor or you\u2019re a painter, you\u2019re using yourself as a guinea pig and the tool, and you make this thing and the thing becomes the thing that lasts. It\u2019s a way of transgressing death,\u201d he insisted.<\/p>\n Schnabel then added\u201d \u201cI\u2019m not going to be around here for very long. I might be here for a few more years.\u201d Even if he lived to be 100 years old, the filmmaker known for his art history biopics\u00a0Basquiat<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0At Eternity\u2019s Gate<\/em> added \u201cthe thing is the work, becoming the poem is the thing.\u201d<\/p>\n At another point in the Q&A, after referring to a line in the film claiming God is a woman, Schnabel touted the influence of his wife, Louise Kugelberg, on the film as she stood in the audience to take credit for co-writing and editing the film.<\/p>\n In the Hand of Dante<\/em>\u00a0is adapted from Nick Tosches\u2019 2002 novel of the same name, and stars Oscar Isaac as both the middle ages poet Dante Alighieri and a modern-day author drawn into a dangerous quest when a handwritten manuscript of\u00a0The Divine Comedy<\/em>\u00a0resurfaces via the Vatican and lands in the hands of a New York mob boss.<\/p>\n The film, which bowed in Venice, also stars Gal Gadot,\u00a0Gerard Butler, Al Pacino,\u00a0John Malkovich, Martin Scorsese and Jason Momoa.<\/p>\n Tribeca Festival Lisboa runs through to Nov. 1.<\/p>\n Best of The Hollywood Reporter<\/strong><\/p>\n Sign up for THR’s Newsletter<\/a>.
