Charlie Sheen<\/strong> recently recalled the day he received the news that Tom Cruise<\/strong> was taking over his role in the 1989 movie, Born on the Fourth of July. He said it was a \u201cbig deal\u201d and it had a \u201cbetrayal factor\u201d to it.<\/p>\n Charlie Sheen, known for the popular sitcom Two and a Half Men, recounted the day when his brother, Emilio Estevez, broke the news about Tom Cruise taking over his role in Ron Kovic\u2019s biopic Born on the Fourth of July.<\/p>\n During an interview on Graham Bensinger\u2019s In Depth With Graham episode, Sheen recalled, \u201cEmilio, he calls me. He says, \u2018Hey, man. You sitting down?\u2019 And I think somebody died, right? I\u2019m like, \u2018No, what\u2019s going on?\u201d He says, \u2018Cruise is doing Born on the Fourth.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI love that Emilio thought that I needed to be seated to get news he thought was going to make me faint,\u201d the Hot Shots star continued. \u201cI mean, what are we doing here? It\u2019s a movie.\u201d<\/p>\n Though Sheen took the news better than his brother had anticipated, Sheen still said, \u201cIt\u2019s a big deal. Well, it was also the betrayal factor of it. So I was like, \u2018OK, all right.\u2019\u201d Acknowledging Oliver Stone, the director\u2019s perspective, the Major League actor added, \u201cYou know, Oliver\u2019s been a fan of Tom\u2019s for a long time. It\u2019s a different movie if Tom does it than if I do it.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cYou can\u2019t lose something you never had,\u201d The Book of Sheen author admitted. \u201cI didn\u2019t sign a contract. There was a handshake.\u201d<\/p>\n However, Charlie Sheen spoke about his active participation in the early days of the movie when it was still a concept. \u201cWe had meetings about it, and we had a dinner with Ron Kovic. And then I stopped hearing from him,\u201d the Wall Street actor explained. \u201cWe stopped talking about it, and I reach out to Oliver, and I\u2019m told that he\u2019s in Cuba. Whatever. This is like 1988 or \u201989, right? I\u2019m like, \u2018OK, well, tell him I\u2019m looking for him.\u201d<\/p>\n Years later, when Sheen crossed paths with the director, he confronted him about it. \u201cHe was like, \u2018I just felt like you didn\u2019t have any passion for it. I felt like you lost interest,\u2019\u201d Sheen recalled. \u201cI was like, \u2018Well, I didn\u2019t see you. How do you know how much passion I lost or interest that evaporated if we never talked about it again?\u201d<\/p>\n Nonetheless, Charlie Sheen admitted that Cruise\u2019s work in the movie was \u201cbrilliant,\u201d adding that he \u201cshould have won the Oscar.\u201d<\/p>\n While Tom Cruise did earn an Academy Award nomination for his role in the movie, he didn\u2019t win the award that year.
