For reasons of its own, Apple has eschewed big publicity campaigns for many of its series, so while those new to the streamer, which recently subtracted the + as part of a subtle rebrand, likely know about \u201cSeverance,\u201d \u201cThe Morning Show,\u201d \u201cThe Studio,\u201d \u201cFor All Mankind\u201d and, of course, \u201cTed Lasso,\u201d here\u2019s a list of other series I heartily recommend. The Jessica Chastain-led political thriller \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/tv\/story\/2025-09-24\/jessica-chastain-the-savant-delay-response-charlie-kirk\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:The Savant;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">The Savant<\/a>\u201d would be on the list if Apple hadn&#8217;t delayed its release indefinitely after the shooting death of conservative influencer Charlie Kirk. The streamer has yet to announce a new premiere date.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"mb-4 text-xl font-bold md:text-2xl\">&#8216;Mr. Scorsese&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Fresh off his first-ever acting Emmy nomination, for a cameo on \u201cThe Studio,\u201d legendary director Martin Scorsese is the subject of <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/movies\/newsletter\/2025-10-10\/la-et-rebecca-miller-mr-scorsese-they-live-josie-pussycats-john-sayles-eight-men-out-sound-of-music\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Rebecca Miller\u2019s five-part documentary series;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Rebecca Miller\u2019s five-part documentary series<\/a>. Following 30-something Londoners Nikki (Esther Smith) and Jason (Rafe Spall) as they attempt to create a family, first through procreation and then through adoption, \u201cTrying\u201d is a sweet, sad, funny, smart and gloriously authentic look at parenthood and the inevitably imperfect perfection of family. Four seasons are available, the fifth is on its way.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"mb-4 text-xl font-bold md:text-2xl\">&#8216;Bad Monkey&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Creator Bill Lawrence (\u201cScrubs,\u201d \u201cTed Lasso\u201d) takes on Florida satirist\/mystery novelist Carl Hiaasen in <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/tv\/story\/2024-08-14\/bad-monkey-review\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:this adaptation;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">this adaptation <\/a>of one of Hiaasen\u2019s many novels. (Yes, there will be alligators.) Jack Yancy (Vince Vaughn) is a troubled, chatty and supremely good-guy detective who keeps getting himself into <i>predicaments, <\/i>and this <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/archives\/la-xpm-1992-04-03-vw-400-story.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:being Hiaasen,;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">being Hiaasen,<\/a> some of those predicaments are unbelievably wacky. But everyone, including Vaughn, is having such a good time that it is impossible not to join in. Season 1 debuted in 2024 and a new season is on its way.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"mb-4 text-xl font-bold md:text-2xl\">&#8216;Bad Sisters&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">If you can\u2019t count on <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/awards\/story\/2022-11-23\/bad-sisters-sharon-horgan\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:your sisters;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">your sisters <\/a>to get rid of your horribly abusive, and just generally horrible, husband, do you really have sisters? Adapted from the Belgian series \u201cClan\u201d in 2022 by <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/tv\/story\/2022-08-26\/sharon-horgan-bad-sisters-apple-tv-series\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Sharon Horgan;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Sharon Horgan<\/a>, who also stars, this is an Irish comedy of the darkest dye, sharpest wit and most tender heart, with some grand scenery thrown in. Two seasons. Please make a third.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"mb-4 text-xl font-bold md:text-2xl\">&#8216;Dickinson&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Alena Smith deftly mixes a modern sensibility with period details to imagine the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/tv\/story\/2019-11-01\/dickinson-apple-tv-plus-hailee-steinfeld-review\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:rambunctious youth;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">rambunctious youth<\/a> of poet Emily Dickinson (<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/tv\/story\/2021-11-05\/apple-tv-hailee-steinfeld-dickinson-hawkeye\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Hailee Steinfeld);elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Hailee Steinfeld)<\/a> while paying homage to her work. The words of the real Dickinson often revealed a woman out of her time, and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/tv\/story\/2021-02-26\/dickinson-apple-tv-plus-season-2-finale\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:\u201cDickinson\u201d;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">\u201cDickinson\u201d <\/a>offers a smart and often heartbreaking portrait of a life that could have inspired those words. As one of Apple TV\u2019s first original series, \u201cDickinson\u201d got a lot of attention when it debuted in 2019. Smith, citing issues with Apple\u2019s process, decided to end it after the third season, which is a shame but it remains one of the streamer\u2019s creative masterpieces.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"mb-4 text-xl font-bold md:text-2xl\">&#8216;Home Before Dark&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">There are many reasons to love Dana Fox\u2019s 2020 series about a <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-reviews\/home-before-dark-review-1287935\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:teenage girl;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">teenage girl <\/a>whose love of journalism propels her to investigate a local murder. Based on the real-life exploits of Hilde Lysiak (played by Brooklynn Prince), it also united, for several episodes, the talents of Fox, cinematographer Alice Brooks and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/story\/2020-04-21\/coronavirus-tv-writers-rooms-innovation\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:director Jon M. Chu;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">director Jon M. With a cast headed by Rob McElhenney and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/01\/arts\/television\/mythic-quest-charlotte-nicdao.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Charlotte Nicdao;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Charlotte Nicdao<\/a>, it is a refreshing blend of old and new TV \u2014 it works well as a binge but also as a place to find laughs and succor on a weekly basis. Four seasons and a spinoff (\u201cSide Quest\u201d).<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"mb-4 text-xl font-bold md:text-2xl\">&#8216;Shrinking&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/tv\/story\/2023-01-27\/shrinking-jason-segel-harrison-ford-apple-tv-review\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:\u201cShrinking\u201d;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">\u201cShrinking\u201d<\/a> is one of the better-known Apple TV shows but I couldn\u2019t in good conscience leave it off this list. Created by Lawrence and centered around therapist and widower Jimmy Laird (Jason Segel) as he works through his grief, this is as true an ensemble comedy as you\u2019ll find. The \u201csupporting\u201d characters, including Laird\u2019s fellow therapists \u2014 Paul (Harrison Ford) and Gaby (the divine <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment\/la-et-sundance-updates-2017-htmlstory.html#p=jessica-williams-gets-ready-to-meet-the-incredible-jessica-james\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Jessica Williams;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Jessica Williams<\/a>) \u2014 and his friends and neighbors \u2014 Brian (<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/tv\/story\/2025-09-14\/michael-urie-shrinking-emmys-2025-live-diary\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Michael Urie);elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Michael Urie)<\/a> and Liz (Christa Miller) \u2014 are fascinating, funny and deserving of multiple Emmy nominations. Three seasons with Lawrence saying he would be open to a fourth.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"mb-4 text-xl font-bold md:text-2xl\">&#8216;Down Cemetery Road&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Emma Thompson as a private investigator and Ruth Wilson as a woman seeking answers to the apparent disappearance of a child. If that\u2019s not enough to draw your eye, \u201cDown Cemetery Road,\u201d which premiered Wednesday, is, like \u201cSlow Horses,\u201d adapted from a series of Herron novels. While it doesn\u2019t share that series&#8217; satiric humor, it is a solid mystery-thriller that Thompson\u2019s jaded Zo\u00eb Boehm and Wilson\u2019s tremulous but tough Sarah Tucker lift into the revelatory.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"mb-4 text-xl font-bold md:text-2xl\">&#8216;Manhunt&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">This <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/tv\/story\/2024-03-14\/manhunt-review-apple-tv\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:seven-episode docudrama;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">seven-episode docudrama<\/a> is based on James L. Swanson\u2019s 2006 book, \u201cManhunt: The 12-Day Chase for Lincoln\u2019s Killer,\u201d and that should serve as the essential plot outline. But those who have not read Swanson\u2019s book, or done deep research into the assassination of President Lincoln, may find the plot, motivation and aftermath of John Wilkes Booth\u2019s despicable plan more complicated than they thought. If nothing else, this deeply engaging and alarmingly resonant series highlights the role then-Secretary of War Edwin Stanton <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/awards\/story\/2024-06-14\/tobias-menzies-manhunt-edwin-stanton\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:(Tobias Menzies);elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">(Tobias Menzies)<\/a> played in Booth\u2019s capture, while bringing to life the chaos of the government, and the country, in the days following Lincoln\u2019s death.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"mb-4 text-xl font-bold md:text-2xl\">&#8216;Silo&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/awards\/story\/2025-06-02\/last-of-us-handmaids-tale-paradise-the-boys-silo-dystopias-on-tv\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Postapocalyptic tales;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Postapocalyptic tales<\/a> have long filled our screens, but this one, based on Hugh Howey\u2019s trilogy, is one of the best. In a not-too-distant future when the world has been laid waste by some toxic substance that renders the air poisonous, humanity has been forced underground, into a self-sustaining silo. There a medieval caste system has bred, not surprisingly, rebellion and the suspicion that all is not what it seems above ground. If this sounds familiar (\u201cParadise,\u201d \u201cFallout\u201d), \u201cSilo\u2019s\u201d steam-punk atmosphere and wildly ambitious themes (not to mention a terrific cast that includes Rebecca Ferguson, Rashida Jones, Tim Robbins and David Oyelowo) return the sci-fi genre to its roots as a meaningful meditation on the eternal human condition with all sorts of futuristic gadgets and problematic situations thrown in. After her wealthy and abusive husband dies, Cora Seaborne (Claire Danes) takes her thwarted scientific ambitions to the Essex coast, where a sea serpent has allegedly taken a young girl. There she meets Father Will (<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/awards\/story\/2022-06-14\/a-mischievous-god-a-reverend-and-a-newly-engaged-man-tom-hiddleston\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Tom Hiddleston),;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Tom Hiddleston),<\/a> whose skeptical faith, and ailing wife, make him vulnerable to Cora\u2019s many attractions.
