Then a quick Google search made it abundantly clear. The prospect, quite literally, gave me nightmares.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">At the time, I was a 24-year-old who had just started working on <em>The Observer<\/em>\u2019s foreign desk \u2013 my first job in journalism.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">It was stressful and fun, and I instantly loved it. Towards the end of my second week, I was handed a paper printout and asked to type it up and save it. No further information was given, aside from the instruction: \u201cDon\u2019t make any mistakes.\u201d So I set about painstakingly typing in each sentence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">That Sunday, I woke to see the paper\u2019s front-page story headlined \u201cRevealed: US dirty tricks to win vote on Iraq war\u201d \u2013 and beneath it, a replica of the document I\u2019d typed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">I was proud to have played a small part in <em>The Observer<\/em>\u2019s team that broke the story. Until a phone call from one of the editors informed me \u2013 with deft understatement and a total lack of drama \u2013 that I had caused \u201csomething of an international incident\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">In my effort to be thorough, and not knowing what the document was or where it came from, I had \u201ccorrected\u201d all the American spelling \u201cmistakes\u201d to British English. \u201cRecognize\u201d became \u201crecognise\u201d, \u201cemphasize\u201d became \u201cemphasise\u201d, and \u201cfavorable\u201d was amended to \u201cfavourable\u201d. I thought I was preventing errors. In fact, I\u2019d created a disaster.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Gun\u2019s whistleblowing, which should have sent shockwaves around the world, was now being dismissed as a fake. Thousands of readers \u2013 many American \u2013 complained that the story\u2019s authors had fallen for a hoax or a campaign of misinformation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">My actions had been an innocent mistake born of diligence, but I agonised over how, as the new girl, I would ever regain the paper\u2019s trust.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Yet my blunder paled into insignificance compared with what it meant for Gun. Everything she and my colleagues had worked for was suddenly discredited. But I wanted reassurance that the film made it clear I hadn\u2019t been fired \u2013 that my colleagues and editors had ultimately stood by me, and that I\u2019d gone on to work at the paper for several years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cNot explicitly,\u201d Footman said, \u201cbut you do appear in a later scene.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">I was dismayed that my long-forgotten mistake was being dredged up as a plot point, and worried about being cast as a movie villain when, in reality, I\u2019d simply been doing my best. I wanted people to know that, despite this chapter of my career, I\u2019d gone on to build a successful one.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">So I called an ex-colleague who had helped break Gun\u2019s story and was now working on the film\u2019s script. Could my \u201ccharacter\u201d be removed, I asked? He was kind and sympathetic but said there was no chance. While my role was small, he explained, my actions provided a pivotal plot point \u2013 and besides, because what happened was a matter of historical record, they didn\u2019t need my permission to include me. They wouldn\u2019t even change my name in the credits, meaning it would appear if someone searched online.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">I was indignant, but he was \u2013 legally \u2013 right. It is entirely permissible to \u201ccreate content\u201d from someone else\u2019s life without their consent. With no control over how I was depicted, I felt powerless. Real life is rarely as dramatic as cinema demands, and I knew there would be poetic licence involved. When I went to an early screening for ex-colleagues, I discovered that there was plenty.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The reveal of my mistake drew audible gasps from the audience. Then my character was blamed and publicly berated in the middle of the newsroom \u2013 an imagined moment of public shaming that never happened. It was painful to watch. Worse still, there was no onward storyline for me, leaving the impression that I\u2019d slunk away in disgrace. While the telling of Gun\u2019s story was important, I was left in tears at my own depiction.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">And while I wouldn\u2019t recommend carrying the burden of causing \u201can international incident\u201d through one\u2019s career, it did teach me a valuable lesson in attention to detail. It was my first serious mistake \u2013 and, I hope, my last.
