Audiences haven\u2019t seen the last of paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, who will return in another \u201cConjuring\u201d movie.<\/p>\n
A prequel film is in development at Warner Bros. and New Line, with short film director Rodrigue Huart in talks to direct. Franchise veterans Richard Naing and Ian Goldberg, who co-wrote the two prior \u201cConjuring\u201d films, 2023\u2019s \u201cThe Nun II\u201d and this September\u2019s \u201cThe Conjuring: Last Rites,\u201d are on board to pen the screenplay. No deals have closed at this time.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Conjuring: Last Rites\u201d was billed as the final installment in the paranormal series. However it quickly became clear that wouldn\u2019t be the case after the film became an outsized box office hit, earning a franchise-best $487 million globally.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s unclear whether\u00a0Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson will return for the upcoming cinematic entry after \u201cLast Rites\u201d concluded the story of the Warren family. This next chapter is expected to go back to the beginning and focus on the early years of the ghost hunting couple. That likely means that new actors will take over the helm of the \u201cConjuring\u201d Universe.<\/p>\n
Separately, \u201cThe Conjuring\u201d is expanding to the small screen with HBO in development on a television series that will continue the story established in the feature films. Plot details have been kept under wraps but Nancy Won was recently hired as the show\u2019s writer, executive producer and showrunner<\/a>.<\/p>\n Across nine films (spinoffs include \u201cAnnabelle\u201d and \u201cThe Nun\u201d), the \u201cConjuring\u201d universe has become the highest-grossing horror franchise in history with a combined $2.7 billion. Plus they\u2019re often low-budget, which makes for bloody-good profit margins. James Wan created the occult-tilted property while\u00a0Peter Safran\u00a0has served as a producer on every installment.<\/p>\n Huart doesn\u2019t have any feature credits to his name but has helmed several short films including \u201cTransylvanie,\u201d which won a jury prize at SXSW in 2024, as well as \u201cTrigger\u201d and \u201cReal.\u201d He\u2019s also writing and directing \u201cSuffer Little Children,\u201d a remake of the 1976 Spanish horror film \u201cWho Can Kill a Child?\u201d for Paramount.<\/p>\n Best of Variety<\/strong><\/p>\n Sign up for Variety’s Newsletter<\/a>.
